Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Introduction to Renaissance Art: The teacher will provide a brief overview of the Renaissance period, focusing on the significant cultural and artistic changes that took place. Students should understand the shift from the medieval period to the Renaissance, including the new emphasis on humanism and the rediscovery of classical art and literature.

  2. Understanding the Major Themes of Renaissance Art: The teacher will introduce the major themes and characteristics of Renaissance art. This includes the use of perspective, light and shadow, anatomical accuracy, and the portrayal of human emotions and experiences. Students should be able to identify these elements in Renaissance artwork.

  3. Comparing and Contrasting Renaissance Art with Other Periods: The teacher will encourage students to explore the differences between Renaissance art and art from other periods, such as the medieval period and the Baroque period. Students should be able to articulate these differences, highlighting the unique features of Renaissance art.

Secondary Objectives:

  • Developing Analytical Skills: Through the study of Renaissance art, students will develop their ability to analyze and interpret visual information. They will learn to look for details, identify patterns and themes, and draw conclusions.

  • Promoting Critical Thinking: By comparing and contrasting Renaissance art with art from other periods, students will be encouraged to think critically about the reasons for and implications of artistic changes over time.

  • Enhancing Creativity: The study of art can also inspire students to express their own creativity. As they learn about the techniques and themes of Renaissance art, they may be inspired to create their own artwork in a similar style.

The teacher will ensure that these objectives are clearly communicated to the students at the start of the lesson. They will also provide examples of the types of activities and assessments that will be used to assess mastery of these objectives.

Introduction (8 - 10 minutes)

  1. Review of Necessary Knowledge: The teacher will remind students of the basic concepts of art history, such as the concept of periods in art and the importance of context. This will set the stage for the introduction of the Renaissance period and its art.

  2. Problem Situations:

    • The teacher will present a problem situation where a student is asked to identify the period of a piece of artwork. The artwork will be a clear example of Renaissance art, but the student, lacking the knowledge of Renaissance characteristics, will find it difficult to place it in the correct period.
    • The teacher will also present a situation where a student, having studied medieval art, is asked to create a piece of art in the style of the Renaissance. The student, lacking the understanding of Renaissance techniques and themes, will struggle to create an accurate representation.
  3. Real-World Contextualization:

    • The teacher will explain how Renaissance art has shaped our modern world, from the techniques used in modern art to the influence on architecture and design. They will also highlight how the principles of humanism, which were a key part of Renaissance art, have influenced modern society's values and beliefs.
    • The teacher will also mention famous Renaissance artists, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, and their enduring impact on the art world. They will note their contributions to science and engineering, demonstrating how the Renaissance was a time of great intellectual and artistic advancement.
  4. Topic Introduction:

    • The teacher will introduce the topic of Renaissance art by sharing two intriguing stories. The first is the story of the Mona Lisa, one of the most famous Renaissance paintings, and the mystery surrounding her smile. The second is the story of the Sistine Chapel, a masterpiece of Renaissance art that took Michelangelo four years to complete. These stories will pique the students' interest and set the stage for the study of Renaissance art.
    • To further engage students, the teacher will show a time-lapse video of a modern artist creating a piece of artwork in the style of the Renaissance. This will not only demonstrate the techniques used in Renaissance art but also show how this art form continues to inspire artists today.
