Games and Fun: Hide and Seek and Tag

Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Introduce and familiarize students with the basic rules of Hide and Seek and Tag games, promoting an understanding of how these games are played and what the objectives of each are.
  2. Develop fundamental motor skills, such as running, dodging, chasing, and hiding, through the practice of these games.
  3. Promote the development of social skills, such as cooperation, respect for rules, conflict resolution, and empathy, through interaction and teamwork during the games.

Introduction (10 - 12 minutes)

  1. The teacher starts the lesson by reminding students about the concepts of 'play' and 'game' they have learned in previous classes. He asks questions like: 'What is play?' and 'What is a game?'. Students are encouraged to share their answers and experiences.
  2. Next, the teacher presents two problem situations involving Hide and Seek and Tag games. For example, he may say: 'Imagine you are playing Hide and Seek and can't find a good place to hide, what do you do?' and 'What if you are playing Tag and can't catch anyone, what can you do to improve your chances?'.
  3. The teacher contextualizes the importance of these games for everyday life, explaining that they help develop physical skills like running and dodging, as well as social skills like respecting rules and working as a team.
  4. To spark students' interest, the teacher shares two fun facts about the games. First, he explains that Hide and Seek is a very old game, played for over 200 years, and is played in many countries around the world. Then, he mentions that Tag is also a very old game, with the ancient Greeks playing a version of it called 'Cócegas'.
  5. Finally, the teacher introduces the topic of the lesson, saying: 'Today, we will learn to play Hide and Seek and Tag in a very fun and active way. And, most importantly, we will learn the importance of respecting rules and working as a team. Are you ready for this adventure?'. He encourages students to express their excitement and expectations for the lesson.

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

The teacher should choose between Hide and Seek and Tag games, the one that best suits the class and the available space. Since these games are widely known, it is not necessary to present the rules of both, but to choose one for practice. The goal is for students to have fun while exploring the rules, movements, and strategies of the chosen game. To achieve this, the teacher can follow these steps:

  1. Warm-up (5 - 7 minutes): At this moment, students should be prepared for the main activity. The teacher can organize a small circuit of activities involving running, jumping, dodging, and hiding.
    • Sack race: Divide the class into small groups and provide sacks for each student. They must get into the sacks and run to the finish line without getting out of the sack. This helps develop motor coordination and balance.
    • Jump rope: The teacher can demonstrate different ways to jump rope (single foot, both feet, backward jumping) and students can try to imitate. This helps develop agility and coordination.
  2. Game Explanation (2 - 3 minutes): The teacher briefly explains the rules of the chosen game, the roles of each participant (tagger and fugitives, in the case of Hide and Seek), and the objective of the game. Additionally, he can emphasize the importance of respecting the rules and teamwork.
  3. Game Practice (13 - 15 minutes): At this point, students are encouraged to engage in the game. The teacher should actively observe and guide the students during the game, encouraging them to apply the skills learned during the warm-up.
    • Hide and Seek: The teacher can set a safe space for the game and designate a 'base' area for the fugitives. The goal of the fugitives is to hide without being caught by the tagger. If a fugitive is caught, they become the tagger. The game continues until all fugitives are caught or until time runs out.
    • Tag: The teacher can define a space for the game and designate a 'safe zone'. The tagger's goal is to touch another student and make them the new tagger. The goal of the other students is to avoid being caught and run to the safe zone if threatened.
  4. Post-Game Discussion (5 - 7 minutes): After the game, it is important for students to have a moment to reflect and discuss the experience.
    • How did you feel during the game? Students are encouraged to express their emotions and feelings during the game.
    • What strategies did you use to hide/escape/catch other players? They should reflect on the strategies they used and how it affected their performance in the game.
    • How was it to work as a team/respect the rules? The teacher should guide the discussion so that students realize the importance of teamwork and respecting the rules in the game and in life. The teacher can vary the activities according to the class's interest and ability, ensuring that all students are challenged and have fun at the same time. He should be attentive to ensure a safe and respectful environment throughout the game, intervening if necessary to resolve conflicts or reinforce the importance of mutual respect.

Feedback (8 - 10 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion (3 - 4 minutes): The teacher gathers all students and initiates a group discussion about what was learned during the lesson. He can ask questions like: 'What was the most fun part of the game?' and 'What did you learn about working as a team and respecting the rules?'. All students are encouraged to share their experiences and reflections.
  2. Connection to Theory (3 - 4 minutes): The teacher then connects students' practical experiences with theory. He can say: 'Remember when we talked about the importance of exercising and playing? Today, by playing Hide and Seek or Tag, we not only had fun but also exercised and learned the importance of respecting rules and working as a team'. He can ask questions like: 'How did today's games help us develop our physical skills?' and 'How did respecting rules and teamwork make a difference in the game?'.
  3. Individual Reflection (2 - 3 minutes): To conclude the lesson, the teacher suggests that students make an individual reflection on what they learned. He can ask two simple questions to guide this reflection:
    • What did you learn today that you can use in other play or games?: Students are encouraged to think about how the skills and learnings acquired during the lesson can be applied in other play or game situations.
    • What did you enjoy the most in today's lesson and why?: The teacher encourages students to express their preferences and feelings, thus helping to assess engagement and the effectiveness of the lesson.
  4. Teacher's Feedback (1 minute): The teacher gives brief feedback on the students' participation and performance during the lesson. He can praise individual and collective efforts, highlight observed strengths, suggest areas for improvement for future lessons, and reinforce the importance of respecting rules, teamwork, and regular physical activity. This feedback is an opportunity for students to consolidate what they have learned, reflect on their experiences, and engage in the learning process. Additionally, it allows the teacher to assess the effectiveness of the lesson and make adjustments, if necessary, for future classes.

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Summary (1 - 2 minutes): The teacher starts the conclusion by summarizing the main points of the lesson. He reiterates the rules and objectives of the chosen game (Hide and Seek or Tag), highlighting the motor and social skills that were developed during the activity. Additionally, he recalls the importance of respecting rules and working as a team.
  2. Connection between Theory and Practice (1 - 2 minutes): The teacher then makes the connection between theory, practice, and students' experiences. He explains that by playing Hide and Seek or Tag, they applied in practice what they learned about play and games, motor and social skills. He emphasizes that the lesson provided a meaningful learning experience, where students could experience and experiment with the concepts presented.
  3. Extra Materials (1 - 2 minutes): The teacher suggests some extra materials for students to explore at home. These materials may include books about games and play, educational videos online, websites with ideas for group games, among others. He can also suggest that students practice Hide and Seek and Tag games with friends and family, applying what they learned in the lesson.
  4. Importance of the Subject (1 minute): Finally, the teacher emphasizes the importance of games and play for the physical, mental, emotional, and social development of children. He explains that besides being fun, games help develop essential skills like motor coordination, agility, endurance, and sociability. He also stresses that by participating in games, children learn to respect rules, deal with victory and defeat, work as a team, and resolve conflicts, skills that are fundamental for life in society.
  5. Closure (1 minute): The teacher ends the lesson by thanking all students for their participation and effort. He reinforces the importance of staying active and continuing to play and have fun. He also previews the next lesson, saying: 'In the next lesson, we will continue exploring the world of games and play, but this time with a special focus on creativity. You can't miss it!'.
