The ability of Baroque artists to create works that provoked strong emotions, deepened spirituality, and exalted the power of the clergy and nobility, contributed to the consolidation of the Baroque movement not only in Europe but also in its colonies, as observed in Latin America. In his work, 'The Rape of Proserpina,' the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini is notorious for capturing a fleeting moment in marble, creating a sense of movement and tension that defies the nature of the material and provides a visceral experience to the viewer. Considering the historical context and the characteristics of Baroque art, analyze how the representation of the human figure in Bernini's sculpture exemplifies Baroque ideals of spirituality and theatricality, and discuss how these principles were adapted and transmitted in the context of European colonization in America.
