Object Predicative and Verb-Nominal Predicate

Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Understanding the concept of Predicative of the Object and Verb-Nominal Predicate: Students should understand what a predicative of the object and a verb-nominal predicate are, differentiating them from other predicates. This includes identifying the characteristics and the function of each in the sentence structure.

  2. Identification and Classification of Predicatives of the Object and Verb-Nominal Predicates: Students should be able to identify and classify predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates in different types of texts. This implies recognizing the terms that perform these functions and how they contribute to the meaning of the sentence.

  3. Application of Knowledge in Practical Exercises: Students should be able to apply the acquired knowledge in practical exercises, whether in identification, classification, or textual production. This involves the ability to analyze sentences and to construct sentences containing predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates.

Secondary Objectives:

  • Promote Active Student Participation: The teacher should encourage active student participation throughout the lesson, whether through questions, discussions, problem-solving, or text production. This contributes to student engagement and the consolidation of learning.

  • Stimulate Autonomous Learning: The teacher should encourage students to seek additional examples and explanations outside the school environment, whether through books, websites, videos, among others. This stimulates autonomous learning and the students' curiosity about the subject.

Introduction (10 - 12 minutes)

  1. Review of Previous Content: The teacher should start the lesson by briefly reviewing the concepts of subject, predicate, and direct object, which are fundamental elements for understanding the predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates. This can be done through a quick oral review, questioning the students and clarifying possible doubts. (3 - 4 minutes)

  2. Problem Situations: The teacher can propose two problem situations to arouse the students' interest and contextualize the lesson's theme.

    • First Situation: 'In a news article, we read the following sentence: 'The company considered the employee a hero.' In this sentence, what did the company consider and what did the employee become?'

    • Second Situation: 'In a novel text, we find the following sentence: 'She felt like a queen.' What did the character feel and what did she become?'

These situations should serve as a starting point for the discussion on predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates. (4 - 5 minutes)

  3. Contextualization: The teacher should explain that knowledge about predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates is important for understanding more complex texts and for producing richer and more expressive texts. Examples of how these resources are used in journalistic, literary, advertising texts, among others, can be cited. (1 - 2 minutes)

  4. Introduction to the Topic: To arouse the students' curiosity, the teacher can present two curiosities about the theme:

    • Curiosity 1: 'Did you know that in some languages, such as Latin and Russian, predicatives of the object can agree in gender, number, and case with the direct object? This means that, in addition to modifying the object, they also adapt to its characteristics.'

    • Curiosity 2: 'Did you know that the predicative of the object and the verb-nominal predicate can be expressed by a noun, an adjective, a numeral, a pronoun, a verb in the participle, a subordinate noun clause, among others? In other words, there is a wide variety of terms that can perform these functions in the sentence.'

These curiosities should serve as a hook for the content explanation. (2 - 3 minutes)

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Text Analysis Activity (10 - 12 minutes): The teacher should prepare a text in advance that contains several sentences with predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates. The text can be an excerpt from a book, a news article, an essay, a poem, etc.

    • Step 1: The teacher distributes the text to the students and asks them to underline all sentences containing predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates.
    • Step 2: Then, the teacher asks some students to read aloud the underlined sentences, explaining why they identified that term as a predicative of the object or verb-nominal predicate.
    • Step 3: The teacher makes corrections and clarifies possible doubts that may arise during the activity.
  2. Text Creation Activity (10 - 12 minutes): The teacher proposes that students create a short text, with a maximum of 10 lines, using as many predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates as they can.

    • Step 1: The teacher gives a theme for the text, which can be related to the students' daily lives, a topic of interest to the class, a current affairs theme, etc.
    • Step 2: The teacher guides the students on how they can use predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates to enrich the text, making it more expressive and interesting.
    • Step 3: The students have time to think and write the text.
    • Step 4: Then, some students read the texts aloud to the class. The teacher and the other students comment on the predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates used and their contribution to the text's meaning.
  3. Review and Reinforcement Activity (5 - 6 minutes): The teacher proposes a quick game of associating ideas, in which students must relate sentences with predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates to images or situations that represent the sentences' meanings.

    • Step 1: The teacher prepares some images or situations in advance that can be associated with the sentences. For example, for a sentence like 'She considered the book a masterpiece,' the teacher can prepare an image of a person reading a book and expressing admiration.
    • Step 2: The teacher distributes the images or situations to the students and asks them to associate each one with a sentence from the text they analyzed earlier.
    • Step 3: The teacher makes corrections and clarifies possible doubts that may arise during the activity.

These activities aim to promote understanding of the content in a playful and contextualized way, as well as to stimulate active student participation and the application of acquired knowledge in real communication situations.

Return (8 - 10 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion (3 - 4 minutes): The teacher should promote a group discussion about the solutions or conclusions found by each team during the activities. This can be done through guiding questions, such as:

    • 'What were the main challenges faced when identifying and classifying predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates in the text?'
    • 'How did you perceive the contribution of predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates to the meaning of the analyzed text sentences?'
    • 'What strategies did you use to create the text, considering the presence of predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates?'
  2. Connection with Theory (2 - 3 minutes): The teacher should review the theoretical concepts covered during the lesson, making the connection between the practice carried out and the theory. This can be done through reflective questions, such as:

    • 'How did the activities carried out today contribute to the understanding of what a predicative of the object and a verb-nominal predicate are and how they function in the sentence structure?'
    • 'Can you now more easily identify predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates in texts you read or produce?'
  3. Self-assessment (2 - 3 minutes): Finally, the teacher should propose that students reflect individually on what they learned during the lesson. This can be done through self-assessment questions, such as:

    • 'What was the most important concept you learned today?'
    • 'What questions have not been answered yet? What would you like to learn more about predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates?'

This Return stage is essential to consolidate learning, clarify possible doubts, and instigate students' curiosity to continue learning about the subject. The teacher should pay attention to students' responses, valuing everyone's participation and clarifying doubts that arise.

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Summary of Contents (2 - 3 minutes): The teacher should summarize the main points covered during the lesson, recapitulating what a predicative of the object and a verb-nominal predicate are, how to identify and classify them, and how they contribute to the sentence's meaning. This can be done through a quick oral review or with the help of a board or slides. The teacher should emphasize the most relevant aspects and clarify possible remaining doubts.

  2. Connection between Theory, Practice, and Applications (1 - 2 minutes): The teacher should explain how today's lesson connected theory, practice, and applications. It should be emphasized how the analysis of texts and the production of texts with predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates allowed students to better understand these concepts and how they are used in practice, in different types of texts. The teacher can also mention how the ability to identify and classify predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates can be useful not only for understanding texts but also for producing richer and more expressive texts.

  3. Extra Materials (1 - 2 minutes): The teacher should suggest some extra materials for students who wish to deepen their knowledge on the subject. These materials may include books, websites, videos, online exercises, among others. For example, the teacher can recommend a grammar book that explains in more detail the concept of predicative of the object and verb-nominal predicate, or a website with several examples and exercises on the subject. It is important that the suggested materials are accessible and suitable for the class's comprehension level.

  4. Importance of the Subject (1 minute): Finally, the teacher should emphasize the importance of the learned subject for daily life. It can be mentioned, for example, how the ability to identify and classify predicatives of the object and verb-nominal predicates can contribute to the understanding of more complex texts and to the production of richer and more expressive texts, which is a valuable skill in various life situations, both personal and professional.
