This step is essential to establish a connection between the known (technology in general) and the unknown (technology in English learning). (2 - 3 minutes)

  2. Problem Situations:

    • The teacher then presents two problem situations:
      1. A student who struggles with understanding the English texts can't find a way to make it more engaging.
      2. A student who often makes errors in grammar and spelling but can't figure out how to correct them effectively.
    • The teacher asks the students to think about how technology could help in these situations, sparking initial ideas and discussions. This step helps to contextualize the importance of technology in English learning and sets the stage for the lesson's objectives. (4 - 5 minutes)
  3. Real-World Contextualization: The teacher then explains how technology is used in the real world for language learning. They might share examples of popular language learning apps, online English courses, or how professionals use technology to improve their language skills. This context helps students understand the practical application of the lesson's topic. (2 - 3 minutes)

  4. Topic Introduction: The teacher introduces the topic of the day, "Use Technology: Introduction." They explain that the students will be exploring different digital tools that can help them improve their English skills. The teacher emphasizes that these tools will not only make learning English more interactive and fun but also help them become more independent learners. (2 - 3 minutes)

  5. Engaging Preview: To pique the students' interest, the teacher shares two intriguing facts or stories related to the use of technology in language learning. For example:

    1. The story of Luis von Ahn, a computer science professor, who invented the language learning app, Duolingo, to make education more accessible.
    2. The fact that there are over 1.5 billion English learners worldwide, and many of them use technology to learn and practice the language.

The teacher encourages the students to think about how they can use the tools they'll be introduced to in class to become better English learners. (2 - 3 minutes)

Development (18 - 22 minutes)

Activity 1: Interactive Tool Exploration (8 - 10 minutes)

The first activity is a fun, interactive, and collaborative exploration of various digital tools for English learning. These stations will have a variety of digital tools such as vocabulary apps, grammar correction websites, pronunciation practice programs, and comprehension exercises. Each station will have a brief description of the tool and instructions on how to use it.

  2. Group Formation: The teacher divides the class into groups and assigns each group a station. The teacher ensures that each group is diverse to encourage collaboration and discussion.

  3. Tool Exploration: The students, in their groups, will explore the digital tool at their station. They will follow the instructions provided and navigate through the tool's features. The teacher will circulate around the room, monitoring and assisting as needed, while also encouraging the students to figure out the tools on their own.

  4. Task Completion: The group's objective is to familiarize themselves with the tool, understand its functions, and try out a few exercises or activities. They will also discuss how they think this tool can help them improve their English skills and overcome the problem situations presented in the introduction. They will jot down their findings and thoughts on a shared document provided by the teacher.

  5. Tool Rotation: After about 5 minutes, the teacher will announce the rotation, and each group will move to the next station. This process repeats until all groups have explored all the digital tools.

  6. Wrap Up: At the end of the activity, the teacher will facilitate a group discussion where each group shares their thoughts and findings about the tool they explored. This discussion will help students learn about the various digital tools available and understand their potential benefits for English learning.

Activity 2: Problem-Solving Scenarios (10 - 12 minutes)

The second activity builds on the first one, requiring students to use the knowledge they gained from the tool exploration to solve problem scenarios. Students will remain in their groups for this activity. This problem-solving task promotes critical thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and effective communication skills.

  1. Preparation: The teacher prepares a set of problem scenarios related to English learning. The scenarios are based on the problem situations presented in the introduction and should require the use of a specific digital tool to solve.

  2. Problem Scenario Presentation: The teacher presents one problem scenario to each group. The groups will then have a few minutes to discuss and decide which tool they explored earlier would be most effective in solving the problem.

  3. Solutions and Discussion: After the groups have decided on a solution, each group will present their chosen tool and explain how they would use it to address the problem scenario. The teacher facilitates a class discussion, allowing other students to provide feedback and share their perspectives.

  4. Reflection: At the end of the activity, the teacher asks each group to reflect on the solutions presented by other groups. They will be encouraged to share their thoughts on the effectiveness of each tool and its potential limitations.

  5. Summarize Learning: The teacher wraps up the activity by summarizing the learning points from the group discussion. The teacher reinforces the idea that technology, when used correctly, can be a valuable tool for English learning and help overcome common learning challenges.
