Contemporary Romanticism and Realism

Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Understanding of the historical-literary context: Students should be able to identify and understand the historical and literary context that gave rise to Romanticism and Contemporary Realism. This includes recognizing the main characteristics of these movements, the historical events that influenced their formation, and the most representative authors and works of each.

  2. Comparative analysis between Romanticism and Contemporary Realism: Students should be able to compare and contrast the movements of Romanticism and Contemporary Realism, identifying the similarities and differences in their aesthetic and ideological proposals. This involves the analysis of literary texts and other forms of artistic expression, such as paintings and music, that are representative of these movements.

  3. Development of a critical perspective: Finally, students should be able to develop a critical perspective on Romanticism and Contemporary Realism, reflecting on the impact of these movements on the society of the time and on the formation of contemporary culture. This implies discussing issues such as the representation of reality, the valorization of subjectivity, and the critique of bourgeois society.

These Objectives will be achieved through interactive and playful activities that encourage active student participation in the learning process.

Introduction (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Review of previous contents: The teacher starts the lesson by briefly reviewing the concepts of artistic movement and historical context that were previously studied. This is essential for students to understand and contextualize Romanticism and Contemporary Realism. (2 - 3 minutes)

  2. Problem situations: The teacher presents two situations that involve the concepts to be studied. The first involves the analysis of a poem that mixes characteristics of Romanticism and Contemporary Realism, challenging students to identify and explain these characteristics. The second situation is the comparison of two works of art, one from the romantic period and the other from contemporary realism, and the discussion on how the ideas and feelings expressed in the works reflect the historical context in which they were created. (3 - 5 minutes)

  3. Contextualization: The teacher highlights the importance of studying Romanticism and Contemporary Realism for the understanding of Western literature and art, as these were movements that deeply influenced the way we understand and produce art to this day. In addition, the teacher may mention how the ideas and feelings expressed in these movements are still present in our culture and society. (2 - 3 minutes)

  4. Capturing students' attention: To arouse students' interest, the teacher can share curiosities about Romanticism and Contemporary Realism. For example, they can mention that Romanticism was a movement that started in literature and only later extended to other arts, while Contemporary Realism was a movement that emerged as a reaction to Romanticism, seeking a more faithful representation of reality. Additionally, the teacher can present some of the main authors and works of these movements, such as Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther," which was one of the first romantic novels, and Aluísio Azevedo's "The Slum," which is one of the main works of Contemporary Realism in Brazil. (3 - 4 minutes)

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Activity 1 - Board Game "Paths of Art": In this activity, students will be divided into groups of 4 to 5 people, and each group will receive a thematic board game. The game's main objective will be to lead the players to know and understand Romanticism and Contemporary Realism. The board will be divided into squares representing different aspects of the movements, such as "Historical Context," "Characteristics," "Works and Authors," and "Impact on Society." Each square will have a task or challenge related to the represented aspect, which the players must complete to advance in the game. Tasks may include reading and interpreting excerpts from literary works, as well as analyzing paintings and musical compositions. At the end of the game, the group that reaches the end of the board first will be the winner, but all participants will have to complete all tasks to be considered winners. During the game, the teacher will circulate among the groups, assisting and clarifying doubts. (10 - 12 minutes)

  2. Activity 2 - Creation of a Romantic and Contemporary Realistic Parody: After the conclusion of the game, students will be challenged to create a parody of a current song, transforming it into a work that reflects the characteristics of Romanticism and Contemporary Realism. For this, students should choose a song they know well and rewrite the lyrics, keeping the melody but incorporating typical elements of these movements, such as sentimentality and the valorization of reality. Students will be encouraged to use creativity and originality, being able to make references to authors and works of these movements, for example. At the end, each group will present their parody to the class, and everyone will vote for the best one. (8 - 10 minutes)

  3. Activity 3 - Group Discussion: After the presentations, the teacher will lead a group discussion about the activities carried out. The objective is for students to reflect on what they have learned and how they have applied this knowledge in the activities. The teacher will guide the discussion, asking questions that stimulate students to think critically about the movements, their characteristics, and impacts. (2 - 3 minutes)

Return (8 - 10 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion - Part 2: The teacher resumes the group discussion, focusing now on the solutions or conclusions found by the students during the activity. This allows students to share their perceptions and understandings, enriching collective learning. The teacher can ask questions like:

    • "What were the main difficulties encountered in the parody creation activity and how did you overcome them?"
    • "How do you think the analysis of the works and authors of Romanticism and Contemporary Realism contributed to the creation of the parody?"
    • "What were the main similarities and differences you noticed between Romanticism and Contemporary Realism throughout the activities?" The objective is for students to reflect and express clearly and cohesively what they have learned and how they have applied the acquired knowledge. (3 - 5 minutes)
  2. Connection with Theory: Based on the discussions and activities carried out, the teacher will make the connection with the studied theory. They can highlight how theoretical concepts were applied in practice, reinforcing the importance of theoretical study for the understanding and appreciation of literary and artistic works. Additionally, the teacher can review the main points discussed, reinforcing the most important concepts. (2 - 3 minutes)

  3. Individual Reflection: To conclude, the teacher proposes that students make an individual reflection on the lesson. They can ask questions like:

    • "What was the most important concept you learned today?"
    • "What questions have not been answered yet?"
    • "How can you apply what you learned today in other situations or disciplines?" The teacher gives a minute for students to reflect and then opens a space for those who wish to share their answers. (2 - 3 minutes)

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Summary of Contents: The teacher recaps the main points discussed during the lesson, reinforcing the characteristics of Romanticism and Contemporary Realism, the historical events that influenced them, the most representative authors and works, and the main ideas and feelings expressed in their works. They also highlight the main conclusions and perceptions that students have obtained from the activities carried out. (2 - 3 minutes)

  2. Connection between Theory, Practice, and Applications: The teacher reinforces how the lesson was able to connect theory and practice through the proposed playful and interactive activities. They highlight how the analysis of works and authors of Romanticism and Contemporary Realism contributed to the creation of the parodies, and how these activities allowed students to apply the studied theoretical concepts in a practical way. Additionally, the teacher can mention how the study of these movements can have applications in other disciplines, such as history and literature, and in the understanding and appreciation of contemporary culture. (1 - 2 minutes)

  3. Additional Materials: The teacher suggests some complementary study materials for students who wish to deepen their knowledge of Romanticism and Contemporary Realism. These materials may include books, documentaries, films, and reference websites. For example, the teacher may suggest reading other works by romantic and contemporary realistic authors, watching films based on works from these movements, or visiting virtual museums that have art collections from these periods. (1 - 2 minutes)

  4. Importance of the Subject: Finally, the teacher emphasizes the importance of studying Romanticism and Contemporary Realism for the students' education. They can mention how these movements influenced and continue to influence the way we express ourselves and perceive the world, and how understanding their ideas and feelings can be useful for the critical analysis of our society and culture. Additionally, the teacher can highlight how the ability to analyze and interpret works of art can be useful in various situations, from reading a book or appreciating a painting to understanding a news article or solving a problem.
