Objectives

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The purpose of this section is to set the stage for students to connect emotionally with the poem before delving into its content. By recognizing and expressing their emotions, students will not only enhance their understanding of the poem but also foster self-awareness and social skills. This emotional engagement is crucial in helping students relate their personal experiences to the poem, thereby enhancing their ability to summarize its essence effectively.

Main Objectives

1. Students will identify and express their feelings about the poem read in class.

2. Students will learn to summarize the poem's main ideas in their own words.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warmup Activity

Breathe to Calm

Mindful Breathing Exercise

1. Start by having students sit comfortably at their desks with their feet flat on the floor and hands resting on their knees.

2. Ask them to close their eyes gently, if they feel comfortable doing so, and take a deep breath in through their nose, filling their lungs completely.

3. Hold the breath for a count of four, encouraging them to feel the breath filling their body.

4. Instruct them to slowly exhale through their mouth, counting to six, allowing any tension to release.

5. Guide them to repeat this deep breathing exercise five times, focusing on the rhythm of their breath and letting go of any distractions.

6. After the fifth breath, ask them to take a moment to notice how they feel now compared to when they started.

Content Contextualization

Understanding poetry can be like understanding our own feelings. Just as poems can evoke different emotions in us, so can our daily experiences. For instance, think about a time when you felt really happy, like winning a game or celebrating a festival with your family. Just like those joyful moments, poems capture feelings and express ideas that resonate with our hearts. This is why summarizing a poem is not just about the words on the page but also about connecting those words to our personal experiences and emotions. By exploring the essence of a poem, students learn to express their feelings and relate better to others, enhancing their social awareness and emotional intelligence.

Development

Duration: (60 - 75 minutes)

Theory Guide

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

1. Introduce the concept of poetry by explaining that poems are a form of expression that captures emotions, stories, and ideas in a creative way. They often use rhythm and imagery to engage the reader's feelings.

2. Discuss the structure of a poem, highlighting elements such as stanzas, lines, rhyme scheme, and imagery. Use a simple and familiar poem, such as 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,' to demonstrate these components.

3. Explain the importance of summarizing a poem, which involves identifying the main theme or message and expressing it in a few sentences. This skill helps in understanding the essence of the poem while encouraging students to articulate their thoughts clearly.

4. Introduce the idea of recognizing emotions in poetry. Explain how poems can evoke joy, sadness, excitement, or nostalgia. Encourage students to think about how a particular poem made them feel and how that feeling connects to its themes.

Activity with Socioemotional Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Poetry in Motion: Summarize and Share

In this activity, students will work in small groups to read a poem aloud, discuss their feelings about it, and create a summary. They will then present their summaries to the class, focusing on the emotions they felt and how those emotions relate to the poem's content.

1. Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 students.

2. Provide each group with a chosen poem that is appropriate for their age, such as 'The Swing' by Robert Louis Stevenson.

3. Ask the groups to read the poem together and discuss how it makes them feel. Encourage them to cite specific lines or phrases that evoke emotions.

4. Have each group summarize the poem in their own words, focusing on the main idea and the emotions expressed.

5. Each group will present their summary to the class, allowing time for questions and sharing feelings about the different interpretations.

Discussion and Group Feedback

After the presentations, encourage a class discussion using the RULER method. Start by inviting students to Recognize their emotions associated with the poem and the summaries shared. Ask them to Understand the causes of these emotions by reflecting on what specific lines or ideas triggered those feelings. Guide them to Label these emotions accurately – are they feelings of joy, sadness, or wonder? Next, allow students to Express their thoughts, sharing how they personally connect with the poem's themes. Finally, Regulate emotions by discussing strategies for managing feelings that arise from reading poetry, such as talking about them with friends or using art to express emotions. This discussion will foster responsible decision-making and build social skills as students learn to communicate their feelings effectively.

Conclusion

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Reflection and Emotional Regulation

To conclude the lesson, the teacher will facilitate a group discussion where students will reflect on their experiences during the lesson. The teacher will encourage students to share any challenges they faced while summarizing the poem and expressing their emotions. Students will be prompted to think about how they managed those emotions and whether they used any strategies, such as deep breathing or talking with their peers. This reflective discussion will help students articulate their feelings and recognize the importance of emotional management when engaging with poetry.

Objective: The objective of this reflection is to encourage students to assess their emotional responses during the lesson. By discussing their challenges and how they managed their emotions, students will gain insight into effective strategies for emotional regulation, fostering self-awareness and self-management skills in various situations.

Glimpse into the Future

The teacher will engage students in a goal-setting activity where each student will write down one personal goal related to their emotional expression and one academic goal focused on summarizing poems better in the future. Students will be encouraged to think about how they can improve their emotional intelligence and literacy skills by using the strategies learned in class. This activity will reinforce the importance of setting achievable goals for both emotional and academic growth.

Setting Goals:

1. To express emotions confidently when discussing literature and personal experiences.

2. To summarize poems with clarity and coherence in future assignments.

3. To engage in discussions with peers about emotions related to poetry. Objective: The objective of this goal-setting activity is to strengthen students' autonomy and encourage them to apply their learning in a meaningful way. By identifying personal and academic goals, students will develop a sense of ownership over their emotional and academic journeys, ensuring continuity in their development beyond the classroom.
