(Originais Teachy 2023) - Question Hard of Spanish

Read the following excerpt, which is an adapted scene from the play 'O Auto da Compadecida' by Ariano Suassuna, and answer the questions proposed: (Scene: João Grilo and Chicó are in front of the Church, where a religious festival is taking place. Chicó is amazed by the number of people entering the temple.) Chicó: Look there, João, there could very well be a wedding going on! Look at the people! There are so many that if it were a procession, it would go around the world. And everyone is here to see the Priest! If he knew how many people come just because of him, he would swell up. (Laughs) João: Imagine if this festival were a funeral? That's when people would really come! Those who go to a funeral like to see the deceased. And it would be so good, Chicó, if it were a funeral, because then, instead of everyone praying for the deceased, it would be to pray for the Priest, which is the same as praying for the deceased, and the Priest wouldn't die! It would be cheaper. (Laughs) Chicó: But, João, Priests never die, do they? (Laughs) João: No. I already said. If a Priest died, it would be the end of the world. It would have to be God himself to make another one. (Laughs) Now, consider the historical and cultural context in which the author wrote the play and answer: 1. Based on the characters' dialogue, discuss how the social critique present in the text is a representation of aspects of Brazilian reality, especially regarding religiosity and the role of the Church in society. 2. Relate the theatrical excerpt to the work 'Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias' by Manuel Antônio de Almeida, highlighting similarities and differences in the approach to cultural and religious elements in 19th century Brazil.
