Ponderal Laws: Introduction

Hard

(Originais Teachy 2024) - Question Hard of Sciences

One of the fundamental principles of Chemistry is the conservation of mass, stated by Lavoisier's Law, which affirms that 'In nature, nothing is created, nothing is lost, everything is transformed'. This law is essential for the understanding of chemical reactions and is complemented by Proust's Law, which establishes that a pure substance always contains the same elements in fixed and defined proportions by mass. Consider the formation reaction of water from hydrogen and oxygen, which is illustrated by the chemical equation: 2H2(g) + O2(g) -> 2H2O(g). If initially we have 10 grams of hydrogen and 40 grams of oxygen in the container, and after the reaction all the hydrogen is consumed, we want to determine: (1) What is the amount of water formed in grams and what is the mass of oxygen remaining at the end of the reaction? (2) If the reaction continues until none of the excess reactants are left, what will be the total mass of products formed and what is the importance of the principle of conservation of mass in this context?

The ozone layer, located in the stratosphere, is responsible for filtering most of the ultraviolet radiation emitted by the Sun. Its role is crucial in protecting life on Earth, as excessive exposure to this radiation can cause serious damage to the skin and contribute to the development of skin cancer. However, the action of chemicals released into the atmosphere, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), has led to a process of ozone layer depletion, making it thinner and less efficient. Considering this context, answer: 1. Explain what CFCs are and how they are related to the destruction of the ozone layer. 2. Discuss the possible consequences for the planet if the depletion of the ozone layer continues at the current rate, considering the interactions between the ozone layer and the different terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Natural phenomena can be considered as extremely important events for our planet, as they influence the climate and the life of the species that exist on it. For example, rains are necessary to keep the rivers and lakes full and thus ensure drinking water for all living beings that depend on it to survive. Which of the following is an example of a natural phenomenon that contributes to the balance of the Earth?

Plants are very special living beings! They need water and sunlight to grow, just like we need food and water to live. Think of a little plant you saw or have at home, and tell me: Why are water and sunlight so important for this little plant to grow and look beautiful? Explain how you think the plant uses water and sunlight to make its food and stay alive.
