English Revolution: From the Puritan Revolution to the Glorious Revolution

Medium

(Originais Teachy 2024) - Question Medium of History

Between 1640 and 1688, England witnessed intense political transformations, including the Puritan Revolution and the subsequent Glorious Revolution. These events reflected not only shifts in power but also the evolution of governmental ideals and practices. The Puritan Revolution, for instance, led to the execution of a king and the establishment of a republican government, while the Glorious Revolution laid the foundations for a constitutional monarchy, limiting the monarch's power and expanding the role of Parliament. In the context of these revolutions, the thinker John Locke, in his work 'Second Treatise of Government' (1689), argued that 'political power is the right to make laws with the penalty of death, and consequently all lesser penalties, for the regulation and preservation of property, and to employ the force of the community in the execution of such laws, and in the defense of the State from external injuries; and all this only for the public good'. Based on your knowledge of the period and considering Locke's analysis of political power: 1) Discuss how the political changes during the Puritan Revolution and the Glorious Revolution reflect the evolution of the concept of power and governance in England. 2) Evaluate how Locke's ideas may have been influenced by the context of these revolutions and how they contributed to the development of the concept of constitutional monarchy.
