Gravitation: Bodies in Orbit

Medium

(Originais Teachy 2023) - Question Medium of Physics

Imagine a satellite is in orbit around Earth in a circular path at a certain altitude. Gravity is the main force responsible for keeping the satellite in orbit. (a) Calculate the orbital velocity of the satellite, considering that the mass of Earth is approximately 5.97 x 10^24 kg, the radius of Earth is approximately 6,371 km, and the altitude of the satellite is 35,000 km above the Earth's surface. (b) Determine the orbital period of the satellite (the time it takes to complete one orbit around Earth). (c) Explain how velocity and gravitational force are related to allow the satellite to remain in orbit.
