Spatial Geometry: Metric Relations of Cones

Medium

(Originais Teachy 2024) - Question Medium of Mathematics

Consider a right circular cone with height 'h' and base radius 'r'. When we cut the cone with a plane parallel to the base, we obtain a figure known as a 'frustum' or 'cone trunk'. Suppose we want to build a water reservoir in the shape of a cone trunk, where the area of the smaller base section is 'A' and the area of the larger base section is 'B', with 'A' < 'B'. The reservoir must have a capacity of 'C' cubic meters of water. (1) Prove that the height 'H' of the cone trunk can be expressed as a function of 'A', 'B', and 'h'. (2) Calculate the height 'H' in terms of 'A', 'B', 'h', and 'C' and determine the shapes that the cross-sections must have to ensure the desired amount of water, considering 'h', 'r', 'A', and 'B' as independent variables.

Pedro and Maria are playing a race. Pedro ran for 15 minutes and Maria ran for 1/4 of an hour. Who ran for a longer time? Justify your answer. In addition, they measured the distance they ran with a tape measure. If Pedro ran 300 meters and Maria ran 0.3 kilometers, who ran a longer distance? Explain your answer using what you know about units of length and time measurement.

In Ana's lunchbox, she has 8 green grapes and 6 purple grapes. In João's lunchbox, he has 4 grapes of each color. If they combine all the grapes and divide them equally between them, who will have more grapes, Ana or João? Write two different addition equations that result in the same total number of grapes to help Ana and João divide the grapes fairly.

In a large engineering system, a building is being designed and energy efficiency is a major concern. To ensure the efficiency of heating and cooling, the air conditioning system must be sized according to the specific needs of the building. The engineer in charge of the project must solve a system of linear equations to determine the ideal operating temperatures. Let the following be the system of equations that models the thermal behavior of the building: 2x + y + 3z = 10, 4x - 6y + 8z = 5, 3x + 7y + 5z = 18. The engineer must rewrite this system of equations in the matrix form Ax = b, where A is the matrix of coefficients, x is the vector of unknowns, and b is the vector of constant terms.
