Chemical Bonds: Covalent

Very Hard

(Originais Teachy 2023) - Question Very Hard of Chemistry

The compound phosgene, COCl2, is a highly toxic gas that was used as a chemical weapon during World War I. This compound is a flat triangular molecule and can be considered an acidic oxide, reacting with water to form hydrochloric acid and carbonic acid. Considering the electronegativities of carbon, oxygen, and chlorine (respectively 2.55, 3.44, and 3.16), and knowing that the electronegativity difference between atoms in a bond is an important factor in determining the bond's character, answer: (1) Explain the type of chemical bond present in the phosgene molecule and (2) Justify, based on the properties of covalent bonds, why phosgene is a gas at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, considering that the boiling point of sodium chloride, an ionic compound, is 1413 degrees Celsius.
