Thermochemistry: Gibbs Free Energy

Easy

(Originais Teachy 2023) - Question Easy of Chemistry

In a chemical reaction, the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) is a parameter that determines the spontaneity of the reaction. Considering the formation reaction of iron (III) oxide, Fe2O3, from its constituent elements metallic iron and oxygen, use the standard formation free energy data (in kJ/mol): ΔGf°(Fe2O3) = -742.0; ΔGf°(Fe) = 0; ΔGf°(O2) = 0. Based on this data: 1) Calculate the change in Gibbs free energy for the formation reaction of Fe2O3 from its constituent elements. 2) Discuss whether the formation of Fe2O3 from Fe and O2 is spontaneous or not, based on the calculated value for the change in Gibbs free energy.
