Ecology: Ecological Pyramids

Very Easy

(Originais Teachy 2023) - Question Very Easy of Biology

Ecological pyramids are graphical representations that show the trophic structure of an ecosystem, that is, the relationship between different trophic levels such as producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, etc., and decomposers, and the amount of energy, biomass, or number of individuals at each level. The energy pyramid is the most representative for evaluating energy flow because it shows the amount of energy available at each trophic level and the efficiency in energy transfer between them. The main elements of an energy pyramid are: (1) Producers, which are the base and hold the most energy, (2) Primary consumers, (3) Secondary consumers, (4) Tertiary consumers, and so on, with energy decreasing at each trophic level due to thermal and metabolic losses. This pyramid is more relevant because energy is the basis of all biological activities and is the way in which ecosystem productivity is measured. Biomass and number of individuals pyramids are less representative because biomass can vary with seasonal changes and the physical structure of organisms, while the number of individuals does not reflect the amount of transferred energy, as smaller organisms can have a high metabolic rate and therefore a high energy consumption despite their small biomass.

In a genetics experiment, a Biology teacher challenged his 3rd-year high school students to analyze a pea plant that exhibits two characteristics: seed color and seed texture. Seed color can be yellow (AA or Aa) or green (aa), and seed texture can be smooth (TT or Tt) or wrinkled (tt). These characteristics are determined by genes on different chromosomes, so they segregate independently, following Mendel's 2nd Law. The teacher challenges the students to determine the expected phenotypic and genotypic ratios in the F2 (second generation) of a cross between two plants that are heterozygous for both characteristics. Additionally, he asks the students to relate the concept of independent assortment to Mendelian inheritance principles. Based on this information: 1. Calculate the expected phenotypic and genotypic ratios in the F2 of the proposed cross. 2. Explain how the independent segregation of alleles for each characteristic relates to Mendel's 2nd Law and how this principle influences the determination of ratios in the F2.

In a pea crossing experiment, Gregor Mendel observed the independent segregation of two different characteristics of the organism. Based on Mendel's Second Law, known as the Law of Independent Assortment, which of the alternatives below correctly represents the phenotypic ratios observed in a dihybrid cross when the characteristics are controlled by two pairs of alleles?

Various parts of the human body have specific receptors for some type of tactile stimulus, such as the hands and feet. The tactile receptors present in the hands are called Meissner's corpuscles, while those present in the feet are known as Ruffini's corpuscles. What are the main functions of these corpuscles?
