The influence of the Baroque was not limited to Europe, extending to the American colonies, where it adapted to local contexts, maintaining its ornamental and dramatic characteristics, but often adopting themes and symbolism specific to indigenous and African cultures. Considering the historical, cultural, and artistic context of the Baroque and its implications for colonization in the Americas, analyze an excerpt from a sonnet by the Baroque poet Gregório de Matos, also known as 'Boca de Inferno', which satirizes the social and religious practices of colonial Bahia.
