Heat Exchanges: Advanced

Medium

(Originais Teachy 2023) - Question Medium of Physics

During the summer, an ice cream shop decides to store 60 kg of ice cream in a freezer. This ice cream, initially at a temperature of -5°C, must be cooled to -20°C to preserve its quality. For this, it was necessary to perform some calculations involving heat transfer. Consider the specific heat of the ice cream as 2.1 kJ/kg•K and the latent heat of fusion of the ice cream as 334 kJ/kg. (a) Calculate the amount of heat required to cool the ice cream to a temperature of -20°C, (b) If during the process some parts of the ice cream increase to 0°C (melting point) and then freeze again, calculate the amount of heat that must be removed until all parts return to the solid state and a temperature of -20°C. (c) Using the results from the previous items, determine the total amount of heat that must be extracted and check if the freezer has enough capacity to perform this process (heat removal capacity of the freezer: 15,000 kJ).
