Textual Cohesion: Use of the Implied Subject

Contextualization

Textual cohesion is an essential aspect of effective writing. It has to do with the connection and relationship that exists between sentences, paragraphs, and sections of a text. In Portuguese, we use several tools to create this cohesion, one of which is the use of implied subjects. The implied subject is a linguistic resource where the subject of the sentence is not expressed but can be easily inferred through the context.

Cohesion is an important facilitator of reader comprehension. Well-constructed texts that use cohesion effectively are clearer, more persuasive, and more enjoyable to read. Without cohesion, a text can become confusing, disorganized, and disjointed. The implied subject is a fundamental part of this process, helping to create fluid and natural texts.

The implied subject is not only important for improving the quality of writing but is also a remarkable characteristic of the Portuguese language. The use of the implied subject is part of what gives Portuguese its distinct flexibility and rhythm. Therefore, understanding and effectively using implied subjects is an essential skill for anyone wishing to improve their writing and reading skills in Portuguese.

In the real world, the ability to express ideas clearly and effectively is highly valued. Whether in an academic or professional environment, or even in everyday situations, the ability to communicate effectively is essential. The use of implied subjects is a tool that helps accomplish this goal.

In addition, understanding how textual cohesion works, including the use of implied subjects, is essential for understanding more complex texts. Whether interpreting a poem, reading a legal contract, or understanding a scientific article, the ability to identify and understand how authors use implied subjects can help increase understanding and appreciation of the text.

Practical Activity: “In Search of the Implied Subject: A Textual Journey”

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to develop a deep understanding of the use of the implied subject as a mechanism of textual cohesion. In addition, the activity aims to develop the students' ability to analyze texts, identify the use of implied subjects, and understand how it contributes to the overall cohesion of the text.

Project Description

In this project, groups of 3 to 5 students will delve into the study of textual cohesion, with a focus on implied subjects. To do this, they will read and analyze a series of texts, identifying the implied subject and explaining its function within the textual cohesion. In addition, they will produce a cohesive text using the implied subject.

Required Materials

  1. Books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc.
  2. Pencils, pens, paper, and highlighters
  3. Computer with internet access

Activity Step-by-Step

  1. Selection of Texts: Each group will choose three texts from different genres (e.g., journalistic, literary, academic) that will be the object of study.

  2. Textual Analysis: Students should carefully read the texts and identify instances of implied subjects. For each case identified, they should also identify what the implied subject refers to and explain how it contributes to the cohesion of the text.

  3. Text Writing: After the analysis, the group should write a text where the use of the implied subject is evident. The text should be between 500-700 words long and can be of any genre that the group chooses.

  4. Report Preparation: Each group must prepare a report describing their activities and findings.

4.1 Introduction: Students should contextualize the theme, its relevance, real-world application, and the purpose of the project.

4.2 Development: Students should explain the theory of implied subjects and textual cohesion. They should detail the activity carried out, the methodology used, and the outcome of the textual analysis. The text produced by the group must also be presented and discussed.

4.3 Conclusion: Students should review the main points of the work, explain what they have learned, and the conclusions about the implied subject and its role in textual cohesion.

4.4 Bibliography: Students should list the sources consulted and used to develop the work.

The project should take one month, with the expectation that each student dedicates five to ten hours to the project. At the end of the project, the report produced will be the primary assessment artifact.
