Classification of Pronouns: Personal, Possessive, and Demonstrative

Context

The Portuguese language is complex, rich, and intricate, making it sometimes challenging for us to understand. One of the essential aspects for the comprehension and production of quality texts are pronouns. Pronouns are words that replace or accompany nouns, indicating the discourse persons or situating them in relation to the three discourse persons. In this project, we will focus on three specific types of pronouns: personal, possessive, and demonstrative.

Personal pronouns represent the discourse persons. They are crucial for the structuring of sentences, as they allow the identification and differentiation of subjects. There are three main groups of personal pronouns: subject, object, and possessive. Mastering the use of personal pronouns is essential to build cohesive and coherent sentences.

Possessive pronouns, in turn, indicate a possession relationship in relation to the discourse persons. They are words that establish a relationship between the speaker and the thing spoken, indicating that something belongs to someone. Correct use of them is fundamental to make clear to whom or what the mentioned possession refers.

Demonstrative pronouns point out the position of a being in relation to the discourse persons, situating them in space, time, or in the discourse itself. They are extremely important to establish reference to an object or person mentioned earlier, differentiating them from other elements.

Pronouns are essential for articulating thought and for effective communication in everyday life. For example, in teamwork in a company, when proposing and discussing ideas, or even when writing an email, pronouns play a crucial role in the clarity and effectiveness of communication. They are also essential in formal situations, such as job interviews, presentations, and essays, where it is necessary to demonstrate mastery of the language and expressive skills.

Furthermore, it is important to note that pronouns are a vital part of language in all types of texts - literary, academic, journalistic, and even in everyday conversations. They contribute to text cohesion, help avoid unnecessary repetitions, and make language more fluid and natural.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Pronouns in Action: A Fun Way to Learn!"

Project Objective:

This project aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and understand in a practical and playful way the classification and use of personal, possessive, and demonstrative pronouns in various contexts.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group must create a short theatrical piece (with an approximate duration of 10 to 15 minutes) focused on the use of personal, possessive, and demonstrative pronouns. The theatrical piece should be contextualized in a real environment, such as a family, work, school situation, among others.

Additionally, each group must write a script for the play, where the characters' lines must be composed using these pronouns correctly and prominently.

Students are encouraged to be creative with their plays, using visual, sound, and scenic resources they may have, as well as costumes.

Required Materials:

  • Paper and pen for drafting the script;
  • Camera for recording the play (can be one of the group members' cell phones);
  • Enthusiasm and creativity for the elaboration of the theatrical piece!

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Step 1: Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Step 2: Discuss in the group the idea for the theatrical piece, taking into consideration the need to highlight the use of personal, possessive, and demonstrative pronouns.
  3. Step 3: Write the script of the play, detailing the characters' lines and the scenes.
  4. Step 4: Review the script, ensuring that the pronouns are being used correctly and prominently.
  5. Step 5: Rehearse the play, adjusting the script if necessary.
  6. Step 6: Record the theatrical piece.
  7. Step 7: Watch the recording, critically analyze the use of pronouns, and prepare the presentation for the class.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Script of the theatrical piece: The script must contain all the characters' lines, as well as important scene markings. The script should highlight the correct use of personal, possessive, and demonstrative pronouns.
  2. Recording of the theatrical piece: The theatrical piece must be recorded and delivered in video format. The video should clearly show the practical application of personal, possessive, and demonstrative pronouns.
  3. Project Report: The report should contain an introduction with the contextualization and relevance of pronoun usage, the development with the adopted methodology, the discussion of the results obtained, and the conclusion with the learning generated by the project. Do not forget to cite the bibliography used.

Remember: the elaboration of the report should be done collaboratively!

Tip: When writing the report, students can divide the sections among the group members and then perform a collaborative review. This not only ensures that all parts of the report are completed but also allows everyone to contribute with different perspectives and ideas.

This project is an excellent way to deepen the understanding of personal, possessive, and demonstrative pronouns, as well as to develop socio-emotional skills, such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity. Enjoy this experience!
