Contextualization
In the English language, prepositions are key words that help establish relationships between words, phrases, and clauses. They provide vital information that helps listeners and readers understand the circumstances of a particular event or details, such as location, direction, time, and manner. Learning and using prepositions correctly is fundamental for fluency in the English language.
With the continuous advancement of globalization, the English language has become increasingly important in daily life, whether in the workplace, academia, or social life. The correct use of prepositions allows for effective communication and clear understanding of the message to be conveyed.
Introduction
In this project, we will explore the theme of prepositions in English. Prepositions are words that define relationships between other words in the context of the sentence. They can indicate, for example, location, direction, time, cause, and other types of relationships. Although it may seem simple on the surface, the correct use of prepositions in English can be a challenge, as there is often no direct correspondence between prepositions in Portuguese and prepositions in English.
The second point we will address is phrasal verbs, which are combinations of verbs with prepositions that take on a different meaning from the original verb and preposition in isolation. In English, this is a very common way to express different ideas and concepts, often in a more colloquial and informal manner.
The third and final part will focus on the importance of prepositions in the context of real-world communication in English. We will use prepositions and phrasal verbs in different contexts, such as sending emails, writing reports, or conversing in English.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Prepositions and Phrasal Verbs in Action"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to reinforce the learning of prepositions and phrasal verbs in a practical and meaningful way, using the English language as a tool for communication and expression.
Detailed Project Description
Each group should create a narrative diary of a fictional trip to a foreign country, with an emphasis on the correct and varied use of prepositions and phrasal verbs. The diary should have multiple entries, each related to a day of the trip, and cover different aspects such as:
- Planning and preparation for the trip
- Description of the route and the destination
- Activities carried out during the trip
- Impressions and experiences lived
In addition, each group should create a glossary with all the prepositions and phrasal verbs used, explaining their meanings and uses in the context of the diary.
Required Materials
- Computer with internet access for research
- Writing materials (pen, paper)
- Word processing program (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc)
- English dictionary
Detailed Step-by-Step
- Each group should plan the trip, deciding on the destination, activities to be done, foods to be tasted, places to be visited, etc.
- Next, the groups should research the most commonly used prepositions and phrasal verbs in these situations, using the suggested references and other resources.
- The next step is to write the diary, describing in detail the trip and activities. It is important that prepositions and phrasal verbs are used fluently and naturally in the text.
- After completing the diary, the groups should create the glossary, listing all the prepositions and phrasal verbs used, their meanings, and examples of use in the context of the diary.
- Finally, each group should prepare a presentation in which they will share their trips and learn about the others.
Project Deliverables
The final result of the project will be an oral presentation (which can be collaborative or individual, according to the group's decision), a written travel diary, and a detailed glossary of prepositions and phrasal verbs. These deliverables must be submitted within one month from the date of this project's delivery.
Through these activities, students will reinforce their knowledge of prepositions and phrasal verbs in English, practice writing and speaking in English, and also learn to work in teams and manage deadlines. In addition, students will be able to express their ideas more fluently and naturally in English.
It is important to note that, for the writing of the written document, students must follow the following structure:
- Introduction: The student must contextualize the theme, its relevance, and the project's objective. In this section, students should provide basic information about the trip, such as the destination, route, travel dates, and planned activities.
- Development: Students must explain the theory behind the use of prepositions and phrasal verbs, discuss how they were applied to the planning and description of the trip, and present the diary and glossary.
- Conclusion: Students must summarize the main points of the work, discuss the lessons learned and the difficulties faced, and conclude by discussing how this project helped develop fluency in English and teamwork.
- Bibliography: Finally, students must indicate the sources used for the project, including books, web pages, videos, etc.
