Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to delve into Byzantine art, exploring the history, technique, stylization, and the important role of iconography in this art that marked Christianity. This will be achieved through the study of central elements of Byzantine art, culminating in the creation of a mosaic inspired by Byzantine styles.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students will divide into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will have three main tasks:

1. Research on Byzantine art, focusing on four main topics: History of Byzantine art, Byzantine mosaic techniques, Byzantine iconography, and Influence of Byzantine art on other cultures and periods.
2. Apply their acquired knowledge to create a mosaic inspired by the Byzantine style, using accessible materials. The mosaic should reflect Byzantine aesthetics and iconography, and each group can choose a theme of their preference within the researched topics.
3. Write a project report containing the following topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Required Materials

• Books, magazines, and online resources for research.
• Pencils and paper for sketches.
• Cardboard paper for the mosaic base.
• Scissors.
• Colored pencils, markers, paints, or any other material for coloring the mosaic pieces.
• Glue.

Step by Step

Research (approximately 6 hours)

1. Divide the research topics among group members and research individually.
2. Present the findings to the group and discuss what was learned.
3. Together, decide on a mosaic theme based on the research conducted.

Mosaic Creation (approximately 6 hours)

4. Plan the mosaic composition, creating a sketch on paper.
5. Cut small pieces of colored paper to form the mosaic.
6. Glue the pieces on the cardboard paper following the planned layout.
7. After finishing the collage, make the necessary finishes and let it dry.

Report (approximately 4 hours)

8. Write an introduction contextualizing the Byzantine art theme, its relevance, real-world application, and project objectives.
9. In the development section, explain the theory behind the central theme (Byzantine art), describe the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and present/discuss the results obtained.
10. In the conclusion, summarize the main points, explain the learnings gained, and draw conclusions about the project experience.
11. In the bibliography, list the sources used during research and work elaboration.
