Contextualization

Mathematics is a powerful language that allows us to quantify, measure, and interpret the world around us. One of the most effective ways to interpret mathematical information is through graphs. Graphs can help us see patterns, trends, and correlations in a way that raw numbers or a sheet full of data simply cannot.

Graphs are visual tools that allow us to understand and interpret data in an easier and more direct way. They are used in a variety of fields, from science and engineering to economics and politics. Graphs can help us make predictions, make decisions, and understand the complex systems of our world. Therefore, it is essential that you, as students, learn to create and interpret graphs.

Introduction

In this project, we will learn about the theory of graphs, their application in the real world, and how we can use them to solve problems. We will learn about different types of graphs and understand how they can be used to represent different types of information. We will learn to differentiate between column, pictorial, line, and bar graphs, and how each of them can be used to represent different types of data.

Understanding graphs is an important mathematical skill that helps us understand the world around us. They are a powerful tool that we can use to make predictions, understand trends, and make data-driven decisions. But before we start, we need to understand what graphs are, how they are created, and why they are so important.

Practical Activity: "Real World Graphs"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the knowledge acquired about graphs in a practical scenario. Students must conduct research on a topic of their choice and represent the collected data in graphs. Topics can range from environmental issues, fashion trends, sports statistics, analysis of best-selling books, among others.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will choose a topic of interest and conduct field or online research to collect data that can be graphically represented.

Students will use their knowledge of graphs to decide the best type of graph to represent their data. They will present their data in column, pictorial, line, and bar graphs, as appropriate for their data sets. They must also be able to explain why they chose a particular type of graph over another.

Required Materials

  1. Computer with internet access for research.
  2. Graphic creation software (can be an Excel spreadsheet, Google Sheets, or other online graphic tools).
  3. Paper and pens for drawing graphs by hand (if desired).
  4. Writing material for the preparation of the report.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Choose a topic of interest for the group, allowing for sufficient data research.
  3. Conduct research to collect the data.
  4. Organize the collected data in a table.
  5. Decide on the best type of graph to represent your data.
  6. Create the graphs with the obtained data.
  7. Prepare a presentation explaining your graphs and what they represent.
  8. Write a final report on the project.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver:

  1. The created graphs, with captions and titles.
  2. A presentation explaining the graphs and the data presented.
  3. A final report. The report should contain an introduction (with the contextualization of the chosen theme and the relevance of this project), development (explaining the theory used, the methodology, the activity details, and the results obtained), conclusion (summarizing the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions about the project), and bibliography.

The report should connect the activities carried out in the project, describing how the data was collected, the choice of graph type, and the process of creating the graphs. It should also explain how the results were interpreted and how the experience contributed to understanding the use and importance of graphs in the real world.

Writing the report is a crucial element of this project, as it requires students to analyze critically the work they have done, reflect on the process and learning, and communicate clearly their findings and experiences.
