Expansion of the English Language

Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Understanding the influence of the English language in the current world: Students should acquire an appreciation and awareness of the expansion of the English language as a global language. They should understand how the English language spread and became a lingua franca in various contexts such as trade, technology, science, entertainment, and diplomacy.

  2. Analyzing the historical and cultural reasons for the expansion of the English language: Students should be able to identify the historical and cultural factors that contributed to the expansion of the English language. They should understand how colonization, globalization, and the influence of pop culture played a role in the dissemination of the English language.

  3. Reflecting on the implications of the expansion of the English language: Students should be able to articulate the positive and negative implications of the expansion of the English language. They should be able to discuss issues such as linguistic hegemony, the impact on linguistic and cultural diversity, and the opportunities and challenges that fluency in English can bring.

Introduction (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Review of previous content: The teacher should start the lesson by reminding students about the concept of lingua franca and the idea of a language that is widely used as a means of communication among people who do not speak the same native language. This will serve as a basis for the discussion on the expansion of the English language. (3 - 4 minutes)

  2. Problem-based situations: The teacher can present two situations for students to consider:

    • Situation 1: Imagine you are a scientist from a non-English-speaking country. You have discovered a cure for a serious disease, but you need to collaborate with other scientists from different countries to develop it. How can the expansion of the English language help or hinder this collaboration?
    • Situation 2: Suppose you are a young person living in a small village in a developing country. Your family has the opportunity to move to a larger city where there are more job opportunities. However, you do not speak English, and most jobs in the city require fluency in English. How can the expansion of the English language affect your life and your choices? (5 - 7 minutes)
  3. Contextualization: The teacher should explain to students that the expansion of the English language has real implications in their lives, from how they communicate globally to the job and educational opportunities they may have. Additionally, the expansion of the English language also has social and cultural impacts, which will be explored during the lesson. (2 - 3 minutes)

  4. Engaging students' attention: To spark students' interest, the teacher can share some fun facts about the English language and its expansion:

    • Fun Fact 1: English is the third most spoken language in the world, after Mandarin and Spanish. However, if we consider not only native speakers but also non-native speakers, English is the most spoken language in the world.
    • Fun Fact 2: The word 'OK' is one of the most widely recognized and used words in many languages, thanks to the influence of the English language. It originated as an abbreviation of 'all correct' in English, but is now used independently of its original form in many contexts and languages. (3 - 4 minutes)

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Activity 1: Board Game 'English Empire' (10 - 12 minutes)

    • Preparation: The teacher should divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a 'English Empire' game board. The board should represent a world map and contain various colored houses, each representing a continent. Additionally, the teacher should provide each group with a set of question cards and a game coin.

    • Rules: Each group should toss the game coin to determine who starts. The winning group should toss the coin again to determine how many houses they can advance. Then, they should answer a question from the question card that corresponds to the color of the house they landed on. If they answer correctly, they advance; if not, they lose their turn. The goal of the game is for each group to 'conquer' the most continents on the map.

    • Objective of the Activity: The objective of this activity is for students to review and consolidate the lesson content in a fun and interactive way. The questions in the game should focus on the expansion of the English language, its historical and cultural reasons, and its implications. This will help students internalize the knowledge in a playful manner.

  2. Activity 2: Debate Simulation 'English: Friend or Foe?' (10 - 12 minutes)

    • Preparation: The teacher should divide the class into two groups. Each group represents a side of the debate: the 'Pros', who will argue that the expansion of the English language is beneficial, and the 'Cons', who will argue that it is harmful. The teacher should provide each group with research materials (such as books, articles, reliable websites) to prepare their arguments.

    • Development: Each group will have a set time to prepare their arguments. Then, the groups take turns presenting their arguments, counterarguments, and rebuttals. The teacher should act as a moderator, ensuring that the debate is respectful and constructive. In the end, students should vote on which group presented the most convincing arguments.

    • Objective of the Activity: The objective of this activity is for students to develop critical thinking and argumentation skills while applying the knowledge acquired during the lesson. Additionally, the activity helps students understand the complex and multifaceted issues related to the expansion of the English language.

  3. Activity 3: Poster Creation 'The Influence of the English Language in My Daily Life' (5 - 8 minutes)

    • Preparation: The teacher should provide each group with a large blank poster, colored markers, and stickers. Each group should choose a leader for the activity.

    • Development: The leader of each group should ask the other group members to share examples of how the English language influences their daily lives. These examples may include the use of English words in their conversations, using the internet in English, consuming media in English, among others. The leader should record these examples on the poster using drawings, words, and stickers.

    • Objective of the Activity: The objective of this activity is for students to reflect on the presence of the English language in their lives, reinforcing the idea that English is a global lingua franca. Additionally, the activity promotes teamwork and creativity.

Return (8 - 10 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion (3 - 4 minutes): The teacher should facilitate a group discussion on the solutions or conclusions reached by each group during the activities. Each group will have up to 2 minutes to share their reflections and main arguments from the debate. The teacher should encourage all students to participate, asking targeted questions and requesting clarifications when necessary.

  2. Connection to Reality (2 - 3 minutes): After the discussion, the teacher should connect the students' conclusions to reality. This can be done by highlighting how the issues discussed during the lesson apply to the real world. For example, the teacher can mention how fluency in English can open doors to global job opportunities, or how the hegemony of the English language can affect linguistic and cultural diversity. The goal is for students to see the relevance of what they have learned.

  3. Individual Reflection (2 - 3 minutes): The teacher should prompt students to individually reflect on what they have learned during the lesson. They should think about the following questions:

    1. What was the most important concept you learned today?
    2. What questions have not been answered yet?

The teacher should give a minute for students to silently think about these questions. Then, students can share their answers with the class if they wish. The teacher should encourage students to express their opinions and ask questions, fostering an open and respectful learning environment.

  4. Student Feedback (1 minute): Finally, the teacher should ask for quick feedback from students about the lesson. This can be done through a quick survey, where students can rate on a scale of 1 to 5 how well they understood the content, how interesting they found the lesson, and any other aspects the teacher wants to evaluate. Student feedback can help the teacher improve future lessons.

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Summary of Contents: The teacher should recap the main points covered during the lesson, emphasizing the expansion of the English language as a global lingua franca, the historical and cultural reasons for this expansion, and the implications of this expansion. The teacher should ensure that key concepts are reinforced and that students have a clear understanding of the material. (2 - 3 minutes)

  2. Connection between Theory, Practice, and Applications: The teacher should highlight how the activities in the lesson - the board game, the debate, and the poster creation - allowed students to apply theory in a practical and interactive way. Additionally, the teacher should reinforce how the lesson content applies to the real world, recalling examples of everyday situations where the English language plays a crucial role. (1 - 2 minutes)

  3. Additional Materials: The teacher should suggest additional reading or viewing materials for students who wish to deepen their understanding of the topic. This may include documentaries, articles, books, educational websites, among others. The teacher should provide a list of these materials, along with a brief description of each and a recommendation of which one students should start exploring first. (1 minute)

  4. Importance of the Topic: Finally, the teacher should emphasize the importance of the lesson topic. The teacher should explain that the ability to communicate effectively in English is increasingly important in today's globalized world, where the English language is widely used in many sectors such as business, science, technology, and entertainment. Additionally, the teacher should highlight that understanding the expansion of the English language can help students better understand the world they live in and the complexities of global communication.
