Deep Breathing for Focus

The Deep Breathing technique is a straightforward and effective practice to help students focus and centre themselves. By concentrating on their breathing, students can calm their minds, improve clarity, and emotionally gear up for the lesson ahead.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably with their backs straight and feet flat on the floor.

2. Instruct them to gently close their eyes and place one hand on their abdomen, just below the ribs, and the other hand on their chest.

3. Ask them to take a deep breath in through their nose, filling their abdomen with air and feeling their hand push out. The chest should stay relatively still.

4. Instruct them to exhale slowly through their mouth, feeling their abdomen move in as the hand follows the motion.

5. Guide them to keep repeating this deep breathing for about 5 minutes, maintaining a calm and steady rhythm.

6. After 5 minutes, prompt students to gently open their eyes and do some light stretches to return to an alert state.

Kontekstualisasi Konten

The Middle Ages is a captivating period in European history, marked by significant social, political, and cultural transformations. To better grasp the importance of this time, think about the major changes that have occurred in your own life, like moving to a new school or adapting to new technologies. These changes can stir a mix of emotions, similar to what people in the Middle Ages experienced during invasions, religious reforms, and evolving social structures.

Imagine living in a time when the Church held tremendous sway over daily life, and scientific knowledge was still emerging. The way people navigated their emotions, challenges, and transformations can be paralleled with how we approach our own lives today. Studying this period sharpens our social awareness and provides insights into how emotions have shaped decisions and relationships throughout history.

Creating a Mind Map of the Middle Ages

Students will create a mind map that connects the main aspects of the Middle Ages discussed in the theoretical lesson. This activity not only helps in organizing information but also promotes reflection on the interconnections between various historical and social elements of the period.

1. Divide the students into small groups of 3 to 4.

2. Provide large paper and coloured markers for each group.

3. Ask students to draw a circle in the centre of the paper and write 'Middle Ages'.

4. Instruct the students to create branches from the central circle, each representing one of the main topics discussed (Church, Feudalism, Arab Invasions, etc.).

5. Ask them to add sub-branches that include specific details and examples for each topic.

6. Encourage students to use colours and images to make the mind map more visual and easier to grasp.

7. Give the groups about 20 minutes to complete their mind maps.

8. After completion, ask each group to present and explain their mind map to the class.

Diskusi dan Umpan Balik Kelompok

Once the mind maps have been presented, initiate a group discussion using the RULER method. Start by prompting students to recognize the emotions they felt during the activity, such as excitement or frustration. Ask what caused these emotions and what the impact was on group collaboration.

Next, guide the students to accurately name these emotions and express them appropriately. Encourage discussion on how they might have better managed negative emotions and share strategies to regulate their feelings more effectively in future activities. This discussion not only reinforces the content of the Middle Ages but also fosters a supportive and collaborative emotional learning environment.
