Objectives

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to clearly present the main and secondary objectives of the lesson, providing students with an overview of what will be discussed and the expected outcomes. This will ensure that all participants understand the importance of the topic and are motivated to engage in the proposed activities.

Main Objectives

1. Facilitate the understanding of personal identity construction through individual questioning about the formation of the self.

2. Provide moments of reflection on social, cultural, and digital influences on identity formation.

3. Stimulate students' critical thinking regarding their own identities and the identities of those around them.

Side Objectives

  1. Encourage the use of digital platforms to share and discuss perceptions of identity.
  2. Promote student engagement through interactive activities involving social media and other digital tools.

Introduction

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to encourage students to reflect on the concept of identity and share their initial perceptions. This will contribute to warming up the discussion and laying the groundwork for the more in-depth activities to follow, as well as promoting integration and initial engagement within the class.

Warming Up

To start the lesson on identity, begin by discussing how identity is a multifaceted and dynamic concept influenced by a variety of social, cultural, and personal factors. Identity is the essence of who we are, shaped by both internal and external factors. Next, instruct students to use their phones to find an interesting fact about identity from a philosophical, sociological, or even psychological perspective. Encourage them to share these facts with the class, promoting an interactive and engaging conversation starter.

Initial Reflections

1. What does it mean to you to have an identity?

2. What are the main factors you believe have influenced the formation of your identity?

3. How do social media impact a person's identity construction?

4. Do you think identity is something fixed, or can it change over time? Why?

5. How do local and global cultures influence identity construction?

Development

Duration: 70 - 85 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to provide a practical and interactive experience where students can explore and reflect on identity construction from different perspectives and contexts, using digital technologies as tools for investigation and expression.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 -  Digital Identity Investigators

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Investigate how identity is constructed and perceived on social media and reflect on the influence that influencers have on the formation of their followers' identity.

- Description: Students will become 'digital detectives' and investigate how identity is constructed and perceived on social media. They will analyze social media profiles, digital influencers, and how people present themselves online.

- Instructions:

  • Split the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Ask each group to choose two social media profiles of influencers (one national and one international).

  • Each group must analyze the chosen profiles, observing posts, follower comments, and how influencers present themselves.

  • Groups should identify elements that contribute to the construction of these influencers' identities (like lifestyle, values, hobbies, etc.).

  • After the analysis, groups should create a digital presentation (it can be a slide, a short video, or a fictional post) to share their findings with the class.

  • Each presentation should include a reflection on how the observed elements may influence the identity of the followers.

Activity 2 -  Digital Diary: Storytelling My Identity

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Provide a personal reflection on identity construction, using storytelling techniques to narrate significant experiences.

- Description: In this activity, students will use their storytelling skills to create a 'Digital Diary' that narrates the story of their own identities. They should use different media (texts, photos, videos) to illustrate important aspects of their lives and reflect on how each experience shaped who they are today.

- Instructions:

  • Split the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each student should create a 'Digital Diary' using a platform like Google Slides, Canva, or any other available digital tool.

  • In the 'Digital Diary,' students should include: (1) a brief autobiography, (2) photos or videos representing significant moments in their lives, (3) texts or audio explaining how those experiences contributed to their identity.

  • Students should share their diaries with group members to receive feedback and suggestions for improvement.

  • Each group should select one or two diaries to present to the class, explaining their choices and reflections on identity.

Activity 3 -  Gamification: Building Identities in the Virtual World

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Analyze the construction of identity in virtual environments and reflect on the choices that shape that identity.

- Description: In this activity, students will dive into the world of games and analyze how identity is constructed in virtual environments. They will create characters in an online game that allows for customization and reflect on the choices made.

- Instructions:

  • Split the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Ask each group to choose an online game that allows character creation and customization (such as The Sims, World of Warcraft, or any other available game).

  • Each group must create characters in the game, making decisions about appearance, abilities, and character backgrounds.

  • Groups should discuss and record the reasons behind the choices made for each character and how those choices reflect the intended identity.

  • Students should create a digital presentation (slide, video, or post) detailing the character creation process and discussing the implications of the choices made in constructing virtual identities.

  • Each group presents their findings to the class, exploring how identity in the virtual world may reflect or differ from identity in the real world.

Feedback

Duration: 20 - 25 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate learning through the exchange of experiences and perceptions among students. By discussing their findings and reflections, they deepen their understanding of identity construction and broaden their perspectives. The 360° feedback activity promotes an environment of collaboration, respect, and personal growth, encouraging self-reflection and valuing everyone's contributions.

Group Discussion

Promote a group discussion with all students. To introduce this discussion, use the following script:

  1. Introduction: Briefly recall the activities that were carried out and the main objectives of the lesson.
  2. Presentation of Findings: Invite each group to share their presentations and reflections. Ask what caught their attention the most during the investigation and creation of digital diaries and virtual characters.
  3. Connection to Reality: Encourage students to discuss how the findings made during the activities relate to the construction of identities in real life and in the digital environment.
  4. Open Discussion: Open the floor for questions and comments, encouraging the exchange of ideas and personal experiences about identity.

Reflections

1. What were the main discoveries you made during the analysis of social media profiles and the creation of digital diaries? 2. How did the choices made in virtual environments reflect or differ from each one's real identity? 3. In what ways can reflections on identity impact your lives and interactions in daily life?

360° Feedback

Instruct students to engage in a 360° feedback step, where each student should receive feedback from other group members. Guide the class to follow these guidelines to ensure that the feedback is constructive and respectful:

  1. Be Specific: Highlight specific points regarding each member's contributions and presentations.
  2. Be Positive: Begin by pointing out positive aspects before mentioning areas for improvement.
  3. Be Respectful: Use respectful language and offer suggestions in a gentle manner.
  4. Be Relevant: Focus on the content presented and the skills demonstrated during the activities.

Conclusion

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

Purpose: The conclusion stage aims to consolidate the day's learning, summarizing the main points discussed in a light and fun way. Additionally, it helps students connect what they've learned to their own lives and the world around them, reinforcing the importance and applicability of the concepts discussed. Finally, this stage aims to close the lesson on a positive and engaging note, leaving students motivated to continue exploring the theme.
