Modernism

Objectives (5 - 10 minutes)

  1. Understand the main concepts and characteristics of Modernism, identify its origin and the main reasons that led to its emergence.
  2. Analyze and discuss the influence of the historical, social, and cultural context on the formation of the modernist movement and its main works.
  3. Develop the ability to critically analyze and interpret modernist works, recognizing the main artists and their contributions to the movement.

Secondary objectives:

  1. Stimulate students' curiosity and interest in the study of modern art, encouraging research and reading of related works and texts.
  2. Promote debate and exchange of ideas among students, favoring the collective construction of knowledge.
  3. Apply the knowledge acquired about Modernism in practical situations, such as analyzing contemporary artworks that have influences from the movement.

Introduction (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Review of previous concepts: The teacher should start the class by reviewing basic art concepts, such as the definition of artistic movements and the importance of the historical, social, and cultural context in their formation. It is also important to briefly review the artistic movements that preceded Modernism, such as Realism and Impressionism, so that students can make connections with the new content. (3 - 5 minutes)

  2. Problem situation: The teacher can propose two hypothetical situations to arouse students' interest. The first one could be: "Imagine that you are artists living in the early 20th century. You are dissatisfied with what you consider to be rigid and limiting rules of art. What would you do to change that?" The second situation could be: "You are contemporary art critics and are analyzing a work that was painted in 1922. How would you describe it and what elements of Modernism would you find in it?" (3 - 5 minutes)

  3. Contextualization: The teacher should then contextualize the importance of Modernism, explaining that this movement was not limited only to visual arts, but also influenced literature, architecture, music, and cinema. In addition, the teacher can mention that Modernism represented a break with tradition and a search for new forms of expression, reflecting the social and cultural transformations of the early 20th century. (2 - 3 minutes)

  4. Introduction to the topic: To arouse students' curiosity, the teacher can share some curiosities about Modernism. For example, they can mention that this movement was strongly influenced by the development of science and technology, and that artists like Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, who are generally associated with the movement, experimented with new techniques and materials. Additionally, the teacher can mention that Modernism was initially met with controversy and criticism, but eventually became one of the most influential and enduring artistic movements in history. (2 - 3 minutes)

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Practical Activity 1 - Creation of a Modernist Manifesto (10-12 minutes)

    • In groups of up to 5 students, each group must create their own "Modernist Manifesto," following the model of the manifestos produced by artists of the movement.
    • The teacher should provide students with materials such as cardboard, colored pens, old magazines for cutouts, and glue.
    • The manifesto should express the group's ideas and values regarding art in a way that reflects the innovative and disruptive spirit characteristic of Modernism.
    • Students should be encouraged to use images, words, and phrases that express their ideas visually and impactfully.
    • After completing the manifestos, each group must present their work to the class, explaining their choices and what they represent.
  2. Practical Activity 2 - Analysis of a Modernist Work (10-12 minutes)

    • Still in groups, students will receive a reproduction of a modernist artwork. It can be a painting, a sculpture, a poem, a musical piece, an excerpt from a film, etc.
    • Students should analyze the work, identifying the main elements that characterize it as modernist, such as innovation in the form of expression, a break with tradition, the influence of the historical, social, and cultural context, etc.
    • Each group should then prepare a short presentation (approximately 3-5 minutes) for the class, in which they explain the work they received, their analysis, and the conclusions they reached.
    • After all presentations, the teacher should lead a class discussion, comparing the different interpretations and analyzing the presented works together.
  3. Complementary Activity - Analysis of a Contemporary Work (5-7 minutes)

    • To conclude the practical part of the class, students will be challenged to find a contemporary artwork that they believe has influences from Modernism.
    • They should research the artwork and prepare a brief presentation, in which they explain the artwork, the modernist influences they identified, and why they believe the artwork is relevant to the class topic.
    • Presentations should be brief (approximately 2-3 minutes each) and the teacher should guide the discussion, asking questions to deepen the analysis and encouraging the participation of all students.

Return (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion (5 - 7 minutes)

    • The teacher should promote a group discussion with all students, allowing each group to share their solutions and conclusions from the practical activities.
    • The teacher can start the discussion by asking guided questions to each group, such as: "What were the main ideas you tried to express in the Modernist Manifesto?" or "Which elements of the modernist work did you identify and how do they reflect the ideas of the movement?".
    • It is important for the teacher to encourage the participation of all students, listening attentively to their contributions and asking questions to deepen the discussion.
  2. Connection with Theory (3 - 5 minutes)

    • After the group discussion, the teacher should make the connection between the practical activities and the theory of Modernism.
    • The teacher can, for example, highlight how the modernist manifestos reflected the artists' dissatisfaction with tradition and the search for new forms of expression, and how the analysis of modernist works allowed students to identify these same characteristics.
    • Additionally, the teacher can discuss how the analysis of contemporary works with modernist influences helps to understand the relevance and durability of the movement.
  3. Individual Reflection (2 - 3 minutes)

    • To conclude the class, the teacher should propose that students make an individual reflection on what they have learned.
    • The teacher can ask questions such as: "What was the most important concept you learned today?" and "What questions have not been answered yet?".
    • Students should have a minute to think about their answers to these questions, and then they will be invited to share their reflections with the class.
    • The teacher should encourage students to be honest in their answers, reminding them that reflection is an important part of the learning process.
  4. Teacher Feedback (1 - 2 minutes)

    • After the individual reflection, the teacher should give overall feedback on the class, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement.
    • The teacher should praise the effort and participation of the students, highlight the most interesting ideas that emerged during the discussion, and point out the most important connections between theory and practice.
    • At the same time, the teacher should remind students of the questions that have not been answered yet and encourage them to continue exploring the topic at home or in future classes.

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Summary and Recapitulation (2 - 3 minutes)

    • The teacher should start the Conclusion by briefly summarizing the main points that were addressed during the class.
    • They should recall the key concepts of Modernism, the reasons for its emergence, the defining characteristics, and the influence of the historical, social, and cultural context.
    • Additionally, the teacher should recap the main ideas and conclusions that emerged during the practical activities, reinforcing the importance of students' active participation in the learning process.
  2. Connection between Theory, Practice, and Applications (1 - 2 minutes)

    • The teacher should then explain how the class connected the theory of Modernism with the practice of analyzing modernist and contemporary artworks.
    • They should emphasize that the practical activities allowed students to apply theoretical concepts in a concrete and meaningful way, and that the group discussion enriched everyone's understanding.
    • Additionally, the teacher should emphasize that the ability to analyze and interpret artworks is a valuable skill that can be applied not only in the classroom but also in many aspects of life.
  3. Extra Materials (1 - 2 minutes)

    • The teacher should then suggest some extra materials for students who wish to deepen their knowledge of Modernism.
    • These materials may include books, documentaries, museum websites, and art galleries, among others.
    • The teacher should encourage students to explore these materials in their own time, reminding them that learning is not limited to class time.
  4. Importance of Modernism (1 minute)

    • To conclude the class, the teacher should reinforce the importance of Modernism, explaining that this movement not only revolutionized art but also had a profound impact on society and culture.
    • The teacher can cite examples of how the innovative spirit of Modernism continues to influence artists and inspire new forms of expression to this day.
