Required MaterialsFictional city maps, Markers or post-its, Materials for staging (props, costumes), Computers or tablets, Internet access, Whiteboard or flipchart, Pens and paper for notes, Timer or clock for time management

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

This stage aims to establish the main objectives of the lesson, ensuring that students are aware of the competencies they should develop. The focus is on understanding the varied manifestations of violence, identifying their roots and social impacts, and fostering a critical and proactive approach to address these issues. A clear definition of objectives helps guide discussions and activities in class, maximizing the use of class time for the practical application of previously acquired knowledge.

Main Objectives:

1. Describe and differentiate the various forms of violence (physical, psychological, moral, sexual, and property) within society.

2. Empower students to identify and discuss the causes and consequences of these forms of violence in everyday life.

3. Develop critical skills so that students can propose solutions and alternatives for the prevention and combat of violence.

Side Objectives:

  1. Encourage empathy and mutual respect among students when discussing sensitive topics.
  2. Promote a safe classroom environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their opinions and personal experiences related to the topic.

Introduction

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

The introduction phase serves to engage students with the topic of violence through problem situations they may have encountered or studied previously. These situations help connect the concepts with lived reality, increasing the relevance of the topic. The contextualization aims to insert the debate into a broader scenario, showing the importance of understanding violence not as isolated cases, but as part of a social structure that requires analysis and intervention.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Situation 1: A high school student is constantly bullied by their classmates, both physically and online. Discuss how this violence can affect their academic and personal life. What would be the best approach to deal with this situation?

2. Situation 2: In a community, a group of residents is facing forced eviction without prior notice or adequate compensation. How can this form of property violence impact the community? What measures can be taken to prevent or combat this situation?

Contextualization

Violence, in its various manifestations, affects thousands of people every day around the world. From cases of domestic violence, which often remain hidden, to more visible violence like armed conflicts or harassment in public and virtual environments. Studying these situations not only broadens understanding of the social dynamics that perpetuate violence but also prepares students to recognize and act against these injustices in their own lives and communities.

Development

Duration: (75 - 80 minutes)

The development stage aims at the practical application of the knowledge acquired about the different forms of violence. By engaging students in interactive and creative activities, it seeks to consolidate understanding of the concepts, foster skills in analysis, argumentation, and problem-solving, as well as promote empathy and mutual respect. The activities are designed to be fun and educational, providing students the opportunity to explore practical and realistic solutions to the discussed problems.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Map of Violence: An Investigation and Solution Game

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop critical analysis skills, teamwork, and problem-solving related to different types of violence.

- Description: Students will be divided into groups and receive a fictional map of a city with different marked areas representing locations where different types of violence occurred (physical, psychological, moral, sexual, and property). Each group will be tasked with investigating the causes of these incidents and developing action plans to prevent or mitigate these violences in the future.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Provide each group with a map of the fictional city with marked incidents.

  • Each group must investigate one type of violence and its possible causes using pre-studied information.

  • Using creative resources, the group must develop an action plan to combat or prevent these types of violence in the city.

  • Present the plan to the class, justifying their choices and methodologies.

Activity 2 - Drama in the Classroom: Staging Conflict and Resolution Scenes

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Foster empathy and understanding of the emotional and social complexities of violence through dramatic art.

- Description: In this activity, students create and perform short plays that illustrate situations of violence and their resolutions. Each group receives a type of violence to explore artistically, promoting deep reflection on the emotions and impacts involved.

- Instructions:

  • Form groups and assign each a specific type of violence to work on.

  • The groups should create a small dramatic sketch that shows not only the problem but also a possible solution or positive outcome.

  • Gather props and costumes to help with the staging.

  • After preparation, each group presents their piece to the class.

  • Conduct a discussion about the different approaches and solutions presented.

Activity 3 - Dynamic Debate: Confronting Ideas and Solutions

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop debate, argumentation, and critical analysis skills regarding preventive and reactive measures to violence.

- Description: In this interactive activity, students participate in a structured debate where they defend or contest solutions for specific types of violence. The debate is formatted in rounds, with time for preparation and argumentation, stimulating critical thinking and persuasion.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into two large groups. One group defends a solution for a type of violence, while the other group contests.

  • Give each group time to prepare their arguments based on prior studies and information.

  • Conduct alternating rounds of arguments and rebuttals.

  • Allow a final session for questions and answers between the groups.

  • Vote to decide which group presented the most convincing arguments.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage of the lesson plan is to consolidate the knowledge acquired by students, allowing them to reflect and openly discuss the various forms of violence addressed during the lesson. Through group discussion, the aim is to reinforce understanding of the concepts, promote the exchange of ideas and perspectives, and stimulate critical thinking about how to apply the solutions learned in real-life situations.

Group Discussion

Start the group discussion with a brief recap of the activities conducted, asking students how these activities helped them better understand the different forms of violence and their consequences. Encourage students to share insights and personal experiences related to the topic. Use an inclusive and empathetic tone to create a safe environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their opinions.

Key Questions

1. What are the main learnings you gained from participating in the activities about the different forms of violence?

2. How would you apply the proposed solutions in daily life to help prevent or combat violence in your community?

3. How can understanding the causes of violence help create safer and more inclusive environments?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The purpose of this stage of the lesson plan is to ensure that students consolidate the knowledge acquired during the activities, understanding not only the different forms of violence but also how they can apply the learning in promoting positive changes in their communities. This stage also serves to reinforce the link between theory and practice, showing students the relevance of what they have learned in relation to the real world.

Summary

To conclude, let us recap the main forms of violence addressed: physical, psychological, moral, sexual, and property. Each of these manifestations was explored through practical activities, which helped illustrate not only the nature of violence but also the strategies for its prevention and combat.

Theory Connection

This lesson connected theory and practice by allowing students to apply previously studied knowledge in dynamic activities and discussions. The use of problem situations and activities like 'Map of Violence' and 'Dynamic Debate' transformed abstract concepts into concrete and applicable learnings.

Closing

Understanding the different forms of violence and strategies to combat them is crucial because this knowledge is directly applicable in students' daily lives. Understanding the roots and impacts of violence enables them to act as agents of change in their own communities, promoting safer and more inclusive environments.
