Required MaterialsCards with letters of the alphabet, Maps for the treasure hunt, Symbolic prizes for the winners, Large panel for assembling letters, Cut-out pieces with letters of the alphabet, Writing materials (paper, pens), Scripts for theater, Adequate time for rehearsals and presentations

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The Objectives stage is crucial to establish a clear foundation of what is expected for students to learn and achieve during the class. By defining specific objectives, the teacher directs the students' focus towards the essential competencies that must be developed. This helps to ensure that all parties are aligned and prepared for the practical activities that will follow, thus maximizing learning efficiency.

Main Objectives:

1. Empower students to list and differentiate the letters of the alphabet, identifying characteristics that make them unique.

2. Develop the ability to associate sounds and words with the letters of the alphabet, promoting literacy.

3. Encourage active participation from students in identifying and discussing the letters and words that contain them.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The Introduction serves to engage students with the content they studied previously and to contextualize the practical importance of the alphabet in real-life situations. Problem situations encourage students to apply prior knowledge creatively, preparing them for the practical class activities. The contextualization helps to perceive the relevance of the alphabet in everyday life, increasing student interest and motivation.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Ask students to think of a situation where they need to write a note to a friend but don't know how to write their name. They should consider which letters make up the name and how those letters sound.

2. Propose the following scenario: a detective receives an anonymous message that may contain the identity of the thief. He must decipher the message, which consists of words written only with alphabet letters. Students should think about the letters that form the words and how they can help the detective.

Contextualization

Encourage students to think about how the alphabet is used in daily life, such as in reading street signs, product labels, and even in video games that use secret codes made up of letters. Show that knowledge of letters and their sounds is fundamental for reading and writing, and that learning the alphabet is the basis for many other communication skills.

Development

Duration: (75 - 80 minutes)

The Development stage is designed to consolidate students' prior knowledge of the alphabet and expand that knowledge through practical and interactive activities. The proposed activities aim not only to reinforce letter identification and sounds but also to stimulate creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. This section is essential for the practical application of the content studied, ensuring that students can experience and explore the alphabet in a meaningful and engaging way.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Letter Treasure Hunt

> Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

- Objective: Develop the ability to identify, associate sounds, and form words with the letters of the alphabet through a playful and collaborative activity.

- Description: In this activity, students will be divided into groups of up to 5 people to participate in a treasure hunt inside the classroom. The objective is to find hidden cards containing letters of the alphabet, identify the letters, associate their sounds and finally form short words that contain those letters.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Explain that each group will receive a map indicating where the cards with the letters are hidden.

  • Each group must follow the map and find the cards. Upon finding a card, the group must write down the letter, say a word that starts with that letter, and, if possible, say the sound the letter makes.

  • The groups that manage to form the largest number of words with the letters found will win a symbolic prize.

  • The total time for the activity will be 60 minutes. Reserve the last 10 minutes for discussion of the results and review of the letters and words found.

Activity 2 - Assembling the Alphabet

> Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

- Objective: Promote knowledge and familiarity with the letters of the alphabet, reinforcing alphabetical order and associating letters with words and sounds.

- Description: Students, in groups, will receive a set of pieces containing cut-out letters of the alphabet. The challenge is to assemble a large panel with all the letters in alphabetical order, identifying and discussing unique characteristics of each letter, such as sounds and words that begin with them.

- Instructions:

  • Organize the class into groups of no more than 5 students.

  • Give each group a set of pieces with the letters of the alphabet.

  • Guide the students to assemble a large panel on the floor, placing the letters in alphabetical order.

  • Each group must discuss and write down at least one word that starts with each letter, and if possible, the sound it makes.

  • At the end, each group will present their panel and explain the characteristics of the letters used.

  • Estimated time for the activity: 70 minutes.

Activity 3 - Letter Theater

> Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

- Objective: Creatively and dramatically explore the characteristics of the letters of the alphabet, promoting the association of sounds and words with the letters.

- Description: In this activity, each student group will choose a letter and create a small play in which the chosen letter must be the protagonist. The play must include the sound, shape, and words that start with that letter in a playful and creative way.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the students into groups of up to 5 participants.

  • Each group chooses a letter of the alphabet to be the theme of their play.

  • Students must create a short script that highlights the sound, shape, and at least three words that begin with the chosen letter.

  • Allow groups to rehearse their plays for 40 minutes.

  • At the end, each group will present their play to the class, and the other students must guess which letter was represented.

  • The total duration of the activity is 70 minutes.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate the learning gained during the practical activities, allowing students to reflect and articulate what they have learned. The group discussion helps reinforce understanding of the concepts, allows for the exchange of ideas and perspectives among students, and provides the teacher with valuable insight into students' understanding of the content. Additionally, it strengthens students' communication and argumentation skills.

Group Discussion

After completing the activities, gather all students for a group discussion. Start the discussion with a brief introduction, highlighting the importance of teamwork and what they learned about the alphabet. Encourage each group to share their experiences, highlighting the words and letters that stood out the most and why. This is a moment for students to express what they discovered and how they felt about the activities.

Key Questions

1. Which letters of the alphabet did you find easiest or hardest to identify and why?

2. Was there any letter that you associated with more than one word or sound? How did that happen?

3. How did today's activities help reinforce what you already knew about the alphabet?

Conclusion

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this Conclusion stage is to reinforce and synthesize the knowledge acquired during the lesson, ensuring that students have a clear understanding of the studied content and its practical relevance. Moreover, this stage serves to highlight how learning the alphabet applies in everyday life and different contexts, preparing students to use these skills outside the school environment.

Summary

To conclude, it is essential to recap the main learnings about the alphabet. Students explored the letters, their sounds, and how the letters combine to form words. Through interactive activities such as the Letter Treasure Hunt, Assembling the Alphabet, and the Letter Theater, they were able to practice identifying and associating letters with words and sounds in a playful and engaging way.

Theory Connection

Today's lesson connected theory with practice by allowing students to apply prior knowledge in real and creative situations. The proposed activities were designed to solidify understanding of the alphabet, not only as a set of letters but as essential tools for written and oral communication in daily life.

Closing

The importance of mastering the alphabet extends beyond the classroom, directly influencing essential skills such as reading, writing, and effective communication. Understanding and being able to use the alphabet appropriately is fundamental for students' academic and personal success, and today's activities were designed to reinforce that understanding.
