Migration

Migration Journey: Motivations, Impacts, and Challenges

Entering the Discovery Portal

The sun reflected on the waters of the river while receiving the fresh morning breeze. However, the small village was in turmoil. On that day, Pedro's family was preparing to embark on a long journey. With tears in their eyes, they said goodbye to friends and family, leaving behind their roots in hopes of finding a better life in unknown lands. Pedro wondered what the new place would be like and if he would make new friends.

Quizz: Have you ever imagined having to leave your home, friends, and school to live in a new and unknown place?  What feelings and challenges would you face on this journey?

Exploring the Surface

Migration is a phenomenon that has accompanied humanity since the dawn of time, shaping civilizations and cultures over the centuries. Whether for economic reasons, conflicts, or natural disasters, people around the world continue to migrate in search of better living conditions. Understanding the reasons behind these movements and their impacts is essential for us to comprehend our own history and the globalized society we live in today.

Addressing the theme of migration allows us to recognize the complexity of human relations and the challenges that arise when individuals and cultures meet. Migration is not just a geographical change; it involves the interaction and adaptation of people to new environments, which can transform both the lives of migrants and the communities that receive them. Learning more about this process helps us develop empathy and critical thinking, crucial skills in today's world.

In this chapter, we will explore the main motivations that lead people to migrate, as well as the cultural, economic, and social impacts these movements generate. We will dive into real and fictional stories, using digital and interactive tools to learn in a dynamic and engaging way. Ready to start this journey? Let's go! ‍♂️‍♀️

What Motivates People to Migrate?

Imagine you won a golden ticket to your favorite singer's concert. Now, imagine the concert will be in a completely different country, where you don't know anyone and don’t speak the language. Sounds scary, right? But just like you might be willing to take a risk for an epic concert, many people migrate in search of better opportunities, even if it means facing the unknown. The motivations can vary: from seeking a better-paying job to fleeing conflicts and natural disasters. And, of course, some just want the more exciting trip than a roller coaster! 

Now let's get serious (or at least try). One of the main reasons for migration is the search for better living conditions. Think of your great-grandmother Laura migrating to a bigger city because the cookie factory in her village went out of business. Additionally, many people need to flee conflicts, such as wars and persecutions. You can't enjoy life with explosions in the backyard, can you? And we won't even talk about the impact of natural disasters like earthquakes or floods. When nature decides to play DJ apocalypse, the best thing to do is dance (literally) away from there.

Finally, we have those reasons you never imagined: love and study. Yes, some people are forced to leave in search of true love, and we're not talking about a Harry Styles concert. Students also migrate to study at better universities (or just to enjoy that famous exchange program that appears in movies). If until now you thought that migrating was just for survival, think again! Sometimes, changing places is the necessary step to realizing dreams. 

Proposed Activity: Migration Stories

Do a quick research and find an interesting (and real) reason why someone migrated. It could be a friend, a relative, or even a famous story from the Internet. Share this story in the class WhatsApp group, including the reason for migration and an emoji that represents what you felt upon learning this story.

Cultural Impacts: Mixing Flavors 

Have you ever thought about what the world would be like without pizza? Or without sushi? That's right, migration is one of the reasons for the culinary delights we love! When people migrate, they bring their cultures, traditions, and, of course, their secret family recipes with them. This transforms the culture of the place that receives the migrants, creating a unique and delicious blend. Thus, Italian cuisine reached America, and Japanese tempura crossed the world. After all, no one refuses good food, right? 

But culture is not just about food. Think of your neighbor Roberto, who came from Spain and brought his passion for flamenco. Or your classmate, Aisha, who taught you a few words in Arabic. Sharing cultural experiences is like adding new ingredients to the social cauldron. This not only enriches our daily lives but also makes us more open and understanding regarding differences. So, when you try to dance to African music or practice Indian yoga, you're experiencing the cultural impacts of migration!

On the other hand, this mixing is not always easy. Imagine trying to mix ketchup with ice cream. It might not work very well at first, right? Sometimes, the traditions and values of migrants can clash with those of the receiving community. But that's where respect and patience come in. The challenge is to find harmony in differences and create a new joint culture that everyone can celebrate. In the end, it's all about learning and growing together, like a big global family. 

Proposed Activity: Flavors of the World

Create a fun post on Instagram or Facebook (it can be Stories) where you talk about a typical dish from another culture that you love and how it represents the mix of cultures. Tag the class profile to share with your classmates!

Economic Impacts: Work and Money 

Imagine if everyone in your city decided to sell lemonade. It would be chaos, right? Too much supply, little demand, and suddenly everyone has a surplus of lemons. Now, think of the economy as a giant lemonade market. When people migrate, they bring new skills, start new businesses, and can even transform the local economy. Suddenly, the city that only made lemonade starts having lemon pie, lemon sorbet, and even lemon perfume! 

Migrants often fill gaps in the labor market. For example, if there is a shortage of doctors or engineers in a country, professionals from other parts of the world may migrate to fill these vacancies. This not only helps the economy grow but also improves the quality of life for people who receive these services. It's like everyone gets a better and more diverse slice of the pie (which, in this case, is lemon).

However, not everything is rosy (or lemony). Sometimes, the arrival of migrants can cause economic tension. This happens when there is stiff competition for jobs or resources. But with smart management and inclusive policies, it's possible to turn these challenges into growth opportunities. In the end, the global economy benefits when it consists of diverse hands (and minds) working together. 

Proposed Activity: Migrant Businesses

Do a little research and find an interesting business (in food, technology, fashion, etc.) that was founded by an immigrant in your city or a place you know. Share in the WhatsApp group and explain how this business impacted the local economy.

Social Impacts: Connecting in the New Community 欄

Do you know that feeling of the first week at a new school, where you don't know anyone and are trying to figure out which table to sit at during recess? Now, imagine doing that in a new country with a different language. It's challenging, right? When migrants arrive in a new place, they need to create new social connections from scratch. They have to find new friends, get to know their neighbors, and adapt to new social norms. 

The new social connections bring benefits for both migrants and the receiving community. Migrants bring new perspectives, talents, and experiences that can enrich community life. For example, your new classmate from Italy might teach you how to play soccer differently, or your Japanese neighbor might introduce you to traditional games you've never seen before.

But just like in any new friendship, there are challenges. Prejudices, misunderstandings, and language barriers can hinder the integration of migrants. However, mutual efforts for understanding and acceptance can turn these difficulties into opportunities for shared learning and growth. After all, every new friendship built is an additional brick in the construction of a stronger and united society. 隣

Proposed Activity: New Community, New Connections

Interview a friend or relative who has moved to a different city or country. Ask about the social challenges they faced and how they overcame them. Summarize this interview and share it in the class forum.
