Once upon a time, in the charming city of Vila Alegre, a group of 4th-grade students was about to embark on an epic journey to discover the secrets of municipal public power. Teacher Fernando, a wise and inspired mentor, set them a challenging mission: to understand how the city's administration worked and, more importantly, how they could be agents of transformation themselves. Each student was equipped with a tablet or cell phone, ready to begin this digital adventure.
The students were divided into groups, each with the task of investigating different branches of public administration. The first stop of the journey began at the majestic town hall, an old and imposing building, where they were welcomed by the charismatic mayor Lara. With contagious energy, she explained that her role was to manage the city and ensure that all services functioned well. Lara spoke with shining eyes about the challenges and joys of her role, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm among the young learners.
Excited, the students continued their investigation, delving into the functions of other important municipal leaders. The group studying health secretary Jonas discovered that he was responsible for the coordination of hospitals and health posts. Observing closely the visits he made to the emergency services, the students realized how quick and well-informed decisions were vital for the functioning of an efficient healthcare system. Another group focused on education secretary Marina, who worked tirelessly to improve schools and ensure quality education. By following her meetings and planning, the children understood the importance of good educational administration for the community's future.
But the adventure was just beginning. To practically experience the challenges of managing a city, the students participated in an exciting municipal management simulation. Using the game SimCity Edu, they became mayors, councilors, and secretaries, facing real dilemmas about budgets, public policies, and municipal services. Every decision made directly influenced the well-being of their virtual city. It was during these simulations that they perceived the weight of every choice and the responsibility that lay upon the shoulders of municipal leaders.
Not satisfied with just simulating, the students decided to leave their mark on the real city of Vila Alegre. They became municipal influencers, creating campaigns on social media to promote popular participation in city management. Using digital tools like Canva and Pixton, they developed creative posts, inspiring videos, and captivating digital comics. Each campaign showed, clearly and funnily, how each resident could contribute to a more participative and inclusive public management. The city began to see a growing movement of community engagement, thanks to the young learners.
The adventure culminated in a collective presentation of the campaigns. The classroom was lively, and the most effective strategies were warmly discussed. The students shared their experiences and learnings passionately, aspiring for a more collaborative and conscious future for Vila Alegre. The highlight was a municipal quiz show on Kahoot!, where they tested their knowledge in a fun and competitive way. The laughter and vibrant discussions showed that, in addition to learning, the students were genuinely enjoying themselves and engaging.
Through this journey, the students of Vila Alegre not only learned about the branches of municipal public power. They became more conscious and active citizens, understanding that city administration is a collective task. They left this experience knowing that each one has the power to make a difference. And thus, Vila Alegre continued to be an increasingly better place to live, thanks to the participation of its young and enthusiastic residents. The mission given by teacher Fernando was successfully accomplished, and who knows, perhaps the future leaders of the city were revealed there.
